Manuscript endorsement on cover to wife in Columbia, S.C., "Tudor Hall, S.C ., Jan 5, 1862" cds and matching "Due 10" handstamp; couple corner tears at top from opening, one affecting the postmark, Very Fine, an attractive signature from Col. Wade Hampton of the infamous Hampton Legion.

Organized by Wade Hampton in early 1861, Hampton's Legion initially boasted a large number of South Carolina's leading citizens, including future generals J. Johnston Pettigrew, Stephen Dill Lee, Martin W. Gary, and Matthew C. Butler. The various elements of the Legion fought in most of the major Eastern operations of 1862.
