Confederacy, Manassas, Ga./May 14, 1863. Blue cds on cover to Vicksburg with matching "Paid 10" in handstamp, endorsed "40th Ga. Reg't., Bartow's Brig." at bottom left, Very Fine.

After General Lewis Cass voiced anti-South sentiments, the Georgia General Assembly changed the name of the town, Cassville to Manassas and the name of the county from Cass to Bartow in honor of Colonel Francis S. Bartow, who was killed at the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run).

R.R Taylorville" franked with 1862 5¢ blue horiz. pair (just shaved at top) cancelled by segmented seven bar grid, inside usage franked with manuscript cancelled 1863-64 10¢ blue (four margins, light crease) with manuscript "Reynolds, Ga./July 4" postmarked to Milledgeville, Very Fine, a very scarce Town & County postmark on this nice turned cover.
