Berford & Co. California Letter and Package Express. Red shield handstamp on folded letter to New York, contents datelined "Panama August 16th 1852", repair at top right and some light wear, a Very Fine strike.

Lot 231    

Berford & Cos. Californian Express. Nicely struck blue oval handstamp on 1853 folded letter from San Jose to San Francisco with pencil endorsement "please deliver immediately", manuscript endorsement "Per Berford & Co's Express, June 27th 1853" at top and "Paid" at bottom left, Very Fine and rare, ex-Clifford.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Lot 232    

F.W. Blake & Co. Express/Weaverville. Shield type company frank on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco with "Wells Fargo & Co's Express, from Shasta" yellow label showing train and steamboat, label apparently removed from back and repositioned at upper left covering envelope corner fault (remnants of label still adhere to reverse), still Very Fine appearing and rare conjunctive use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Brown's Express. Blue double-line oval handstamp with matching "$1.50cts" handstamp on cover to Sacramento, originating from Connecticut with manuscript "North Haven, Ct. Dec 5" pmk & "10" rate, edge wear and light stains, Fine, a very rare Express rate handstamp.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Brown's Express between Stockton and the Southern Mines was started in 1850 by William A. Brown, who in 1853 was shot and killed by an assailant who committed suicide after being apprehended.

Brown's Express. Blue double-line oval handstamp with matching "$1." Express rate handstamp on folded letter to Mormon Gulch, Tuolumne Co., Calif., originating from New York with red "New-York/6cts/Paid" cds, letter datelined Oct 11, 1851; sealed tear at bottom, light soiling & edge wear, F.-V.F. and rare.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Buckley's Express Paid. Blue framed handstamped frank on 3¢ green entire, usual conjunctive usage with black printed Wells, Fargo & Co. frank to San Francisco, postmarked with blue "Darwin, Cal." cds, Chinese docketing at right, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

A very scarce combination express usage, Buckley's Express operated ca.1874-75 between Kernville and connecting at Bakersfield with Wells, Fargo & Co. and served the wild mining camps in sections of the Kern River, Owens Valley and Death Valley.
