Prior to becoming the most important letter bag operator in San Francisco, Charles P. Kimball gained a reputation for being noisy while selling eastern newspapers brought in on the Panama and Nicaragua steamers. He promoted his wares by walking the streets and bellowing out the names and prices of the papers in rhyming verse.
