Wand & Davis Letter Express. Blue oval handstamp on 1864 3¢ entire to San Francisco used in conjunction with Wells, Fargo & Co. showing their blue "Visalia" old German style handstamp, small tear affecting marking & flap torn, F.-V.F., a very rare express marking.

Wells Fargo & Co./Auburn. Blue oval handstamp with matching "Sept 15th" date stamp below on buff cover to Petersburg, Va., franked with 1851, 3¢ brownish carmine, type II, pair (margins large to shaving frameline at lower left) canceled by blue "Free" in oval handstamp and tied by "New-York, Oct 23" cds, manuscript "Too Late" at top center; small cover tear at upper left and pinhole in each stamp, otherwise Very Fine, a choice and early "Too Late" usage; with 2010 P.F. certificate.

Orange label on large size money letter to San Francisco, town name written in manuscript on label, manuscript endorsement "Chgs 50¢ Paid", reverse with remnants of Wells, Fargo & Co. Express/Bishop Creek wax seal, cover worn & reduced, Fine, a rare item from the ever popular Mono County.

Wells Fargo & Co. Blue Frank. On 1860-61 3¢ Star Die entire to Sacramento, cancelled by "Ship 5" handstamp & "San Francisco, Cal./Dec. 3, 1861", flap torn & slightly reduced at right, Very Fine and choice, an unusual cover coming into San Francisco by private ship & charged 5¢ for transmission beyond San Francisco.

Forwarded by Wells Fargo & Co's California Express. Black on yellow label affixed on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank addressed to Lewiston, W.T. (Washington Territory), cancelled with indistinct blue Wells, Fargo & Co. handstamp with bold blue Collect 50cts in oval which was applied in, forwarded to Red Bluff, Cal. & large "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express/Portland" illustrated label (black on yellow) affixed on reverse (partially torn away), Very Fine, a stunning & rare usage, Cover illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 162).

Wells Fargo & Co./Downieville (Sierra) Aug 29. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) on 1864 3¢ pink entire with Lamping & Co.'s Express printed frank (posthumous Wells Fargo use), A. Daneri correspondence to San Francisco, 1866 docket, light foxing and indicium partly oxidized, F.-V.F., ex-Toaspern.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

A. P. Lamping operated between Marysville and Downieville as the successor to Langton's Pioneer Express after Samuel Langton was accidently killed. Lamping purchased Langton's Yuba River business from Langton's family on November 21, 1865. Lamping sold out to Wells Fargo effective August 1, 1866. This cover is an interesting example of Wells Fargo continuing to recognize and use up the franks of an acquired company.

Wells Fargo & Co./Howlands Flat/Mar 11. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) and "Wells Fargo & Co./La Porte Mar 14" blue oval transit handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) on 1864 3¢ pink entire with black company frank, Samuel Hill correspondence to San Francisco, "1867" docket on the back, slightly reduced at right, Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Wells Fargo covers with company transit handstamps from towns other than San Francisco are unusual. This cover was evidently delayed en route to La Porte. Howland's Flat was 12 miles northeast of La Porte and was the principal town in the Poker Flat gold mining district. It is now a ghost town.

Wells Fargo & Co. Express/Iowa Hill. Bluish oval handstamp tying 1857 3¢ dull red on neat cover to Folsom, Cal., included is original enclosure on Wells, Fargo & Co. printed letterhead, cover endorsed "Free White" as White was the sender & an employee of Wells, Fargo & Co., Very Fine.
