Straight line postmark with matching "Paid" handstamp (BPM 173 + 153) and manuscript "8 pd" rate on 1796 folded letter to Gloucester, Mass., "2 AP" Franklin mark at left with unusal second large circle handstamp, enclosure a list of endorsement of changes of masters of vessels made on certificates of registry in Gloucester signed by collector of the port of Boston Benjamin Lincoln, Very Fine.

(Boston) Fort Independence May 3rd 1821. Dateline on folded cover to Philadelphia with red "Boston Ms May 4" cds and rate from Abraham Eustis (fort commandant) who writes…The transport ship…has carried away my three best companies, & fifteen of my officers. There remains for my command two small companies & four officers. Think you I shall be content?, two vert. file folds, one affecting postmark, F.-V.F., Fort Independence in located on Castle Island in Boston Harbor.

Red straight line handstamp (BPM 229) on folded printed circular to Amesbury, Ms., printed "½ sheet periodical - postage under 100 miles ¾ cent, over 100 miles 1¼ cent." rate notation at top, printed contents entitled "Periodical Circular of the American Temperance Society"; minor edge toning at upper left, still Very Fine, a very scarce early circular usage denoting the periodical rates.

Red cds on 1835 folded letter to Ward, Mass., manuscript "10" rate, forwarded to Hardwick with manuscript "Ward, Ms., April" postmark and "6" rate totalling "16 cents", forwarded again with red "Hardwick, Mas., April 18" oval postmark and manuscript "for 6" totalling "22", Very Fine.

Boston (British Consular Office). Red straight line handstamp (BPM 407) struck on 1844 folded cover to England, The Consul put the letter directly onto the ship which left Boston for Liverpool, at Liverpool the standard packet rate of 1 Shilling was applied with the "AMERICA / L" and blue receiving date stamp struck on reverse, Very Fine, a very scarce postmark with approximately 15 known usages.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

When Britain introduced its West India service with a branch line to the US in 1842 it also tried to establish consular offices in Boston, Charleston, Mobile, New Orleans, and New York. The American Postmaster General became aware of the breach of Sovereignty and by early 1844 had these offices closed. The office at Boston is recorded as using a straight line "BOSTON" handstamp from 2nd December 1842.
