Hawaii, (Incoming) 1886-1917 Incoming Postal Cards. Group of 12 postal cards to Honolulu; array of postal cards including U.S. UX8 1¢ with "T" due and "5" centimes rate handstamp, uprated 1¢ cards including #UX5, UX9, UX10 & UX12, a UX12 with "5/Ctms/T" due handstamp, UX13 usage and a few territorial usages (UX15, UX16); some faults, F.-V.F., an interesting and scarce group.

Hawaii, Lahaina Sandwich Islands, April 4th, 1852. Dateline on folded letter to Westerly, R.I., entered the mails with "San Francisco, Cal., May 3" cds and matching "12" rate handstamp, lengthy three pages letter from whaler aboard the bark S.H. Waterman regarding the mails…there is a Mr. Bolles here merchant who has an Express with the mail which he forwards to Honolulu. mentions postage rates, whaling, etc.; cover age spots and small tear at top, F.-V.F., ex Harris.

Lot 2315    

Hawaii, Lahainaluna, Maui, Dec 24, 1834. Dateline on large lettersheet (10½ x 16½'') with printed Lahainaluna High School broadside with a listing of the Directors, Instructors and Students, letter written by one of the teachers, Rev. Ephraim W. Clark, to his brother in Peacham, Vt., cover with red "New London, Ct., Jul 1" cds and matching straight line "Ship" handstamp, manuscript "20¾" rate; cover front toning, some separation at folds which has been reinforced and portion of sheet missing at right affecting small portion of printed border of the broadside, Fine and very rare, one of the earliest printed Hawaiian lettersheets.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

This letter was carried aboard the whaler Don Quixote which left Maui on December 25 and arrived in New London, Ct. on July 1st, 1835 where this letter enter the mails on the same day.

Hawaii, Late Letter Mail. Wonderful strike of dateless handstamp (MH 759, 1RRR) tying 1866, 5¢ blue, vertical pair on cover to New York with magenta Honolulu cds at left, backstamped with magenta San Francisco transit postmark, tiniest trace of perf tip toning, Very Fine, a very rare marking; with 2006 P.F. certificate.

Hawaii, Paid, Oct 11, 1892. Oval date stamp (Gregory AUXSH-I-I(PAID), Rarity 1RRRR) on 1882, 1¢ red postal card (UX1), addressed to Haiku Sugar Co., Hamakuapoko, Maui, printed message used by the Wilder's Steamship Company to inform them when the steamer "Likelike" (crossed out & "Claudine" added in manuscript) would depart Kahului, Extremely Fine, the finer of two strikes known of this Wilder's Steamship Company date stamp.

Jarvis editor, 208 pgs, complete run contemporary bound, wealth of articles, marine news of incoming and outgoing sailings, advertisements; intact pages with some light tone spotting, cover wear and separation, F.-V.F., a wonderful and rare run of this early Hawaiian newspaper.

Hawaii, Postal Card, U.S. 1873, 1¢ brown on buff. Postal card addressed to Honolulu but unused, reverse with illustrated printed Hawaii social club meeting in 1873 (Boston, Mass.) in honor of newly wedded Mr. and Mrs. Sanford B. Dole; some light soiling on front, F.-V.F., a very rare printed card.
