Hackney & Bolte Penny Post, 1886 (1¢) black on red. In combination with 1883, 2¢ red brown on cover to Philadelphia, Pa., both tied by "Atlantic City, N.J., Jun. 30, 1887" duplex postmark, receiving backstamp; trivial small cover crease at top left, Very Fine, a great on cover rarity, this being one of two on cover usages known mailed on the same day, a third usage tied on a postal card is also known; signed G. Sloane, with 2002 P.F. certificate.

Lot 1261    

Hale & Co. 1845 folded cover from New York to Fall River, Mass. with red boxed "Collect Six Cents for Hale & Co.", cover datelined New York, 3rd Mo.(nth) 27, 1845, reverse shows rare Hale straight line handstamp in red "Mailed Late For The" with manuscript "27" date which was applied in New York, two vert. file folds with some toning, F.-V.F., one of only a handful recorded.

Hill's Post, 1849, 1¢ black on rose. Margins full to irregular margins just touching at bottom, tied by red "Boston, 5cts, Dec 15" integral rate cds on 1849 folded letter to Providence, R.I.; stamp with vertical crease from file fold, Very Fine appearance, one of only seven recorded usages on cover, this being the only example tied on cover, ex Golden; with 1999 P.F. certificate.

Hopedale Penny Post, 1849 (1¢) black on pink. Clear to large margins, uncanceled as always and affixed on fresh cover to Westboro, Mass., in combination with 1853, 3¢ dull red (light gum staining at right) tied by "Milford, Ms., Mar 23" cds, Very Fine, ex Hollowbush, Golden; signed E. Perry, with 2000 P.F. certificate.

Top margin single with large margins around, uncanceled on cover to Liberty Hill, Ct., in combination with 1851, 3¢ dull red tied by grid cancel, matching "Milford, Ms., Mar 19" cds; cover edge wear and slight nick at top, F.-V.F., a lovely example of the Hopedale Penny Post stamp on cover, ex Boker, Golden.

Jones' City Express, 1845, 2¢ black on pink. Margins large to just into frameline at lower right, bright and fresh, uncanceled as usual on locally address cover, straight line "Paid" handstamp, Extremely Fine, quite certainly one of the finest examples of the Jones' City Express stamp on cover, with only ten full covers known, ex Caspary; signed G. Sloane, E. Perry, with 1999 P.F. certificate.

Messenkope's Union Square Post Office, 1849 (1¢) black on green. Clear to large margins, some glaze cracking, tied by manuscript cancel slightly scuffing stamp, on cover to Baltimore, Md. in combination with large margin 1847, 5¢ red brown tied by red square grid cancel, matching "New - York, Feb 20" cds, Very Fine, a rare combination and even more so with the Messenkope's stamp tied as these stamp are normally found not tied to cover.

Metropolitan Post Office, 1852-53, 1¢ red. Die cut as always, canceled by Paid, W.H. Laws boxed handstamp on fresh cover to Norwich Town, Conn., in combination with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by "New York, Feb 12, 1859" cds, receiver docketing at left, Extremely Fine and choice, an attractive Metropolitan Post Office to-the-mails usage.

One Cent Despatch, 1856, 1¢ red. Tied by neat strike of "City Despatch, Nov. 5, 1856" cds on locally addressed cover, with matching "Paid" straight line handstamp; stamp with faint pre-use horizontal crease and cover with repaired backflap and tiny pieces out of top edge, otherwise Very Fine, still an attractive and very scarce local usage, ex Judd; with 2003 P.F. certificate.
