Lot 358    

(Sierra) La Porte (California). Crude black straight-line postal strike (Williams SIE-0920) with two matching "Free" hand stamps and "W. Youlen" handstamp, Very Fine, a most unusual rarity, ex-Myerson.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

W. [William] Youlen was not a legitimately appointed post master but assumed the post as such for La Porte for a period of several weeks to a few months. It is believed this took place in the late 1850?s. Several examples of his mark are known to have passed through the mail, a like example, also addressed to San Jose is located in the Wiltsee Collection. See Letter of Gold, page 310.
