(Tehama) Vina, Cal., May 27, 1889. Double circle postmark (Williams THE-1670) ties 2¢ Bank Note on cover to Sacramento, Very Fine and scarce.

Lot 383    

(Trinity) Trinity Centre (Cal.), August 30th. Manuscript postmark on 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire with pen cancel on the indicium to Robbinston, Maine, with three original 1858 letters including one from a woman to her brother with descriptions of home life and another from the woman's miner husband to his brother in law with humorous content, minor edge wear, Very Fine.

Lot 384    

(Trinity) Weaverville Dec. 23rd 1849. Heading on stampless folded miner's letter from a man suffering from rheumatism to his brother in Iowaville, Iowa, carried outside of the mails and mailed with "New Orleans, La., Mar 21" red postmark and "Ship" red straight line handstamp and "12" manuscript rate marking (2¢ ship fee plus 10¢ postage from New Orleans to Iowaville collect), letter opines that "…gold is plenty here but if a man is doing well there he had better stay there…." and "…mining is a lottery here, a man may strike on a place where he can make a fortune in a few days and he may work for weeks without making anything… there is gold in all the Brooks here, it's hard to wash a pan of dirt without getting some gold but a man won't work unless he can get 3 or 4 bits to the pan of dirt… the best diggins is on the Rivers near the edge of the water so a man has to work in the water to make big wages, that's what crippled me with rheumatism….", Very Fine.

(Tuolumne) Columbia Cal. Straight line postmark with "Feb 10 / 53" manuscript date and "10" in circle handstamped rate marking on stampless cover to Canaan, Maine, minor edge wear, top backflap missing, F.-V.F., illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 309), album page with a gold nugget and a photograph of the Wells Fargo office at Columbia accompanies.

(Tuolumne) Columbia, Cal., Collection Balance. 14 covers (one folded letter), most 1850's, including stampless 10 with two-line straight line postmark plus four different stampless rates with cds postmarks in blue, stamped covers include two with 1851 3¢ pair tied (plus another cover with two-line straight line postmark and stamps cut off), one with 1851 10c tied, a mixed issue cover with 1851 3¢ pair and single plus 1857 1¢ single all tied, an 1863 cover with 1861 3¢ tied by fancy cancel, an 1869 cover to Switzerland with 1861 3¢ with grill pair and 1866 15¢ with grill tied, and an 1878 cover, F.-V.F. overall.

(Tuolumne) Jamestown Cal, Oct. 21st. Manuscript postmark ties 1851 3¢ dull red pair (four margins, discolored) with pen cancels on cover to Richmond, Virginia, pencil note on the back indicates stamps plated by Knapp (59-60L2L), cover a bit nibbled at left and light stains, F.-V.F.
