Type 1 (Haller B) Black Frank, Underprint 45mm Long, Die 1 With Engravers Name. On 1853 3¢ red entire to San Francisco, Cal. cancelled by "Wells, Fargo & Co./Los Angeles" blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 3-3), tear at top, few small edge stains, otherwise Very Fine.

Type 1 (Haller B) Black Frank, Underprint 45mm Long, Die 2 Without Engravers Name. On 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, Cal., cancelled by "Placerville, Cal." blue straight line handstamp (Leutzinger type 14-1) with manuscript "E. Arroyave" agents notation, Very Fine, a rare combination of mark and frank., One of the nicest black woodblocks known.

Type 1 (Haller C) Red (Claret Variety) Frank, "Over Our California and Atlantic Express.", Die 1 With Engravers Name. On 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire addressed to New York City, cancelled for local New York City delivery with Metropolitan Errand and Carrier Express Co. boxed "C.O.D." handstamps and on the reverse most of a very large unlisted oval cachet of "A.M. Hinckley Express" (portion of backflap removed affecting marking), Very Fine and attractive, Ex-Metkin, Rumsey April 1999. Lot 1163 (8 known for type).

On 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire to South Hope, Maine, cancelled in transit by "New York City/Nov. 14" cds (1855 most likely), Very Fine and attractive (Ex. Metkin, Rumsey April 1999. Lot 1166) (7 known for type).

Type 3 (Haller D1) Red Frank, "Through Our Atlantic & California Express.", Die 1 With Engravers Name. On 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire to New York City, NY., cancelled by "Wells, Fargo & Co./San Francisco" blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 3-1), Very Fine, This is the rarest of the red franks with only 4 known, this is the nicest. Transcontinental mail was normally left uncancelled by Wells Fargo as they normally did not deliver mail locally on the east coast, the addressee, New Granada Steam Navigation Co must have been and exception., Ex. Lichtenstein 2004, WF large lot.

Type 4 (Haller Unlisted) Red Frank, "Through Our California and Atlantic Express.", Die 2 Without Engravers Name. On 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt entire to Boston, Mass., cancelled by blue octagonal "Greathouse & Slicer/Yreka/connecting with Wells Fargo & Co" handstamp, flap missing, small expertly repaired holes at top and bottom noted on 1982 P.F. certificate, still Very Fine, a lovely exhibition piece of the greatest rarity, as this is 1 of 2 examples of the Greathouse & Slicer marking on a red franked cover (the other is a paste-up), ex-Metkin.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Delivered by Slicer to Wells Fargo at Shasta and forwarded by them to Boston.
