Forwarded by Reynolds & Co. Express. Oval handstamp on 1849 cover from Louisiana to San Francisco, postmarked "Mansfield, La." cds with small "10" rate handstamp (crossed out) with "40" rate added, included is interesting original enclosure talking of general conditions in the South, the letter ends, PS: Tell us whether it will do to bring Negroes there or not., some edge wear, F.-V.F., a very rare Express cover used in 1849, one of only a handful known used this early.

Lot 559    

Reynolds Express. Clear strike of small shield handstamp on incoming cover to San Francisco, red "Providence R.I., Jun 27" origin cds and matching "40" rate mark, red "San Francisco, 2, Oct 25" integral rate handstamp, "1850" docketing at left; slight soiling and missing backflap, otherwise Very Fine, ex Haas, Edwards.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Reynolds Express served the mining camps located in the district known as the Southern Mines, carrying the miners' outgoing mail to Stockton, San Francisco and Sacramento, and picking up incoming letters at those locales for delivery to the gold camps.

Forwarded By Reynolds & Co. Express. Black oval handstamp on folded letter addressed to "Jamestown, Mormon Creek, San Francisco, California", letter is headed "Washington Nov 28, 1850" and mentions Congress, no postal markings so evidently sent from the East to Reynolds under separate cover and then delivered collect in the mines with "1.00" pencil Express rate, small sealed tear at bottom, Very Fine.

Forwarded by Reynolds, Todd & Co's Express. Blue oval handstamp on 3 folded letters; 1852 cover with "San Francisco" handstamp and matching "Paid" and "Not Paid" in oval handstamps, manuscript "Reynolds & Co Express" but carried by successor Reynolds, Todd & Co., addressed to Pilsbury Hodgkins (Chips) at Sonora, other 1852 cover with clear "Stockton" handstamp from San Francisco to Tuttletown, and 1851 cover with partial "Stockton" handstamp and matching "Paid" straight line handstamp, to Sonora; each with tone spots and a couple with reinforced edge flaws, Fine, A trio of early covers carried by one of the premier express companies serving the Southern Mines.

Reynolds, Todd & Co's Express operated for only 6 months before selling out in April of 1852.

River Express Co./Jan 8, 1890/Stockton, Cal. Red boxed handstamp on cover to San Francisco, Cal., with original enclosure, accompanied by an upper piece of a 2¢ entire with green express frank, red 1894 oval Stockton date stamp and straight line "Sunday," handstamp, Very Fine.

Circular handstamp on incoming cover to Marysville, Cal., red "Georgetown, Ky., Sep 1" origin cds and franked with manuscript canceled 1851, 3¢ dull red, strip of four, cover re-addressed "opposite mouth Nelson Creek, Plumas County"; cover corner repairs at a sideflap added, F.-V.F. appearance.

Rumrill & Co.'s/Northern Express/Connecting With/Wells, Fargo & Co. Partial blue oval date stamp on cover to Marysville, Cal., "Franklin Mills, O., Dec 3" cds and manuscript "10" rate, to express owner Frank Rumrill from his wife-to-be Henrietta Stewart, non-contemporary pencil "Dec 2, 1853" date (date of now missing contents) applied by philatelist Elliott Perry who wrote an article on the correspondence in the 1930's, Very Fine.

Schoch's Copper City Express. Printed frank in ornamental frame (Haller FS4, Ty. 2) on rebacked front of 1861 3¢ Pink to Prairie Cal., entered mails with "Shasta Cal. Mar. 31" circular datestamp and grid cancel, sender's notation "By Mail", front has small edge nicks, Fine appearance, extremely rare, illustrated in Letters of Gold, Ran from 1863 to 1865 from Shasta to Copper City, Cal., there are 9 total known, 5 of this style, ex-Edwards.

Manuscript directive of sender on cover originating at Garrettsville, Ohio and sent to "Meeker Flat, North Fork Feather River, Plumas County, California", "Garrettsville, O., Mar 23" cds and manuscript "R Lee P. M. Free" free frank, with ornately bordered corner card of dry goods merchants Lee & Mills, the "Lee" being Garrettsville postmaster R. Lee, single ink smear in manuscript postmaster free frank, Very Fine.
