Position 92L4, fine centering and sharp detailed impression, tied by "New York, Oct 8" cds on folded printed merchant advertising notice to Pennington, N.J., F.-V.F., an Exceptionally Rare on Cover Single Franking Usage of the 1857, 1¢ Blue Type Ia; with 1984 & 2007 P.F. certificates.

Lot 1408    

1857, 3¢ dull red, type III. Tied by unusual fancy geometric grid cancel on cover postmarked neat Andover Ct. cds to Providence R.I., includes original letter datelined "Hebron, Sept 13, 1861" in the same hand as the sender indicating post-demonitization use, Very Fine; with 2010 P.F. certificate not noting the year of usage.

1857, 5¢ red brown, type I. In combination with 1857, 10¢ green, type II + 12¢ black, 27 cents paid the Bremen-Hamburg rate but sent Prussian closed mail rate on cover to Berne, Switzerland, tied by "Winesburgh, O., Jan 6" cds with matching "Paid" handstamp above and red crayon "6", red "12" credit handstamp and Aachen boxed transit date stamp, transit and receiving backstamps; 10¢ stamp lightly soiled and stamps lifted and placed backed, F.-V.F.; with 2002 P.F. certificate.

1857, 5¢ red brown, type I. In combination with 1857, 10¢ green, type II (top right corner defect) on 1859 cover to Paris, France, tied by large Boston "Paid" in grid handstamp, red New York exchange and British exchange cds's, forwarded within Paris with 10¢ Napoleon tied by dotted lozenge postmark, transit backstamps; cover wear and missing most of backflap, Fine appearance.

1858, 5¢ Indian red, type I. In combination with 1857, 3¢ dull red + 1¢ blue, type V, pair on Knapp, Burrell & Co. corner card cover to Wellington, O., all tied by light Portland, Or. cds's, forwarded to Oberlin with blue Wellington cds's additionally tying stamps, matching "3" rate handstamp at right and manuscript "Due 3cts" at bottom left; right 1¢ with margin nicks at top & 5¢ with trivial corner creases at bottom, F.-V.F. appearance, still a very rare and attractive usage of the very scarce 5¢ Indian Red.

1860, 5¢ brown, type II. Vertical strip of three, bottom stamp Relief F (10th row) with projections at top and bottom only partially removed, well-centered, minor perf tip gum toning, tied by large "New Orleans La. 14 Jan." (1861) cds's on blue folded letter to Gironde, France, red "New York Paid 6" credit datestamp, red "P.D." in frame, French transit datestamps front and back, some minor bleaching along file fold, Very Fine, an extremely choice strip showing combination of Type II reliefs, late Federal usage from New Orleans--Louisiana seceded from the Union on January 26, 1861--ex-Grunin and Zoellner.

Type II single and types III-I in vertical pair, small perf faults from placement at edge, in combination with 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, pair + 3¢ dull red, two singles, tied by bold "New Orleans La. Apr. 21, 1858" cds's on folded cover via Prussian Closed Mail to Antra, Sardinia, black "New-York Br. Pkt." cds on back and red "15" credit handstamp, various transit markings, 1¢ pair creased, F.-V.F. appearance, a very scarce franking and destination.
