Official Seal, 1877, brown. Block of four, well centered, original gum, hinge remnants, some adherence on reverse, Very Fine, a scarce multiple.

Lot 1583    

Official Seal, 1877, brown. Affixed over flap of unpaid cover with "Brooklyn N.Y. Feb 13" cds on flap to New York City, "Held for Postage" circular handstamp, sent to D.L.O. where blue tracking numerals added and label; some toning, Fine and scarce.
Scott No. OX1    $1,200.

Usages in the D.L.O. are characterized by the appearance of blue crayon notation on the front and the cds of the town that sent the letter to the D.L.O. on the back. It was also necessary for the letter to be unpaid, not short paid.

Official Seal, 1877, brown. Affixed as flap seal on reverse of yellow cover to Troy Ks., "White Cloud Ks. Jun 1" cds beneath seal, "Held for Postage" and "Unclaimed" circular handstamps, manuscript. "2" and blue crayon "513", Very Fine and scarce.

Lot 1585 S   

Official Seal, 1879, red brown, Specimen. Pane of 50 with large red "Specimen" across vertical pairs and each with two security punch holes at bottom, o.g., rich color, central selvage at top with A.B.N.Co. imprint and manuscript order Jan/85 notation, apparent faults including reinforced breaks and separation, thee stamps at upper left reattached inverted, Fine appearance, still a remarkable Unique Specimen of the 1879 Post Office Seal Issue and the only recorded examples of this specimen overprint, pictured in Kotanchik Post Office Seals of the United States and Possessions (page 91).

This pane supposedly was found in the estate of a long time employee of the American Bank Note Company.

Official Seal, 1879, red brown. Two, each with purple "Macon, Ga." straightline precancel, used to reattached two halves of German postcard torn in mailing, German stamps tied by Buttenhausen datestamps, red "Accidentally torn by Stamping Machine." two-line handstamp, Very Fine, a remarkable use.

Official Seal, 1879, red brown. Faulty, affixed to reclose a cover bearing 2¢ blue (R152) addressed to Chelsea Mass., framed "Held for Postage" handstamp, "Portland Me. Dec 1" backstamp and 1879 docketing, blue crayon numbers, Very Fine.

Post Office Seal, 1879, brown, "hybrid" large die proof. 222x46mm full card, gilt edges on three sides, from official presentation album, some light foxing at edge, still Very Fine, rare large die proof that exists only in hybrid form.

Official Seal, 1879, brown, plate proof on India. Mounted on card, pane of 30 with A.B.N.Co. imprint at lower right, ample to large margins, Very Fine, the largest known multiple of the 1879 Post Office Seal plate proof, a lovely exhibition item.

Lot 1591    

Official Seal, 1879, brown. Two and a half examples affixed to reseal cover bearing 1857 10¢ green (35) cancelled by manuscript "X" and matching "E. Orleans Ms. Dec" postmark on 1859 cover to the captain of Ship "Endeavor" in care of forwarding agent in Manzanillo, Mexico, origin Dec. 18, 1859 contents, the letter was delayed for 27 years and sent to the Dead Letter Office with "Colima, E.U.M., 16 SET 1886" backstamp, red manuscript. "Postmaster, will you please deliver this letter to Miss T. Doane Mother of Capt Alfred Doane, if living, or to the person addressed on his nearest relatives or descendants. Dead Letter Office. Oct 19th /86" and readdressed to East Orleans, docketed on reverse "Received in Newtonville, Nov 2nd 6:30pm, 1886, A.D."; small abrasion, Fine.

It is interesting to note that the 1857 10¢ issue was demonetized 26 years earlier due to the Civil War.
