Official Seal, 1879, brown, "hybrid" large die proof. On 93 x 70mm card, light crease in margin and slightly toned, Fine, one of only three recorded examples of this proof.

Lot 1599    

Official Seal, 1888, brown. Complete pane of 42, full o.g., from the 6th setting with position 2 showing dent in top frameline (type A) and positions 31 & 33 showing large gash in bottom right frame (type F), bright and fresh, some reinforced perf separations, otherwise Very Fine, the only recorded complete pane from the 6th printing.

Official Seal, 1888, chocolate brown, double impression. First printing on medium paper, position 29, faint fragment of cancel, vertical fold, Fine, this being one of two known true double impressions of the 1888 Post Office Seal issue, the other residing the Luff Collection at the Philatelic Foundation.
Scott No. OX5 var.    Estimate $300 - 400.

Examples of double impressions where the images are widely spaced or skewed are known as printers waste. This used example, with closely aligned impressions, certainly escaped the eyes of the inspectors.

Lot 1601 o   

Official Seal, 1888, chocolate, imperforate. Two singles, town cancels, ample to large margins, usual folds, Very Fine, rare in used condition.
Scott No. OX5 var.    Estimate $150 - 200.

Imperforates are believed to be printer's waste, however few examples (other than the first printings) are believed to have been distributed to post offices as a small number of used examples are known.

Official Seal, Balance of the 1888 Typographs. Balance including stamps and 11 covers, better stamps include OX7b used imperf, OX10 used in Puerto Rico, OX10 imperf block of four, better usages include OX7 used on P.O.D. official business penalty envelope, OX7 six seals on small local Philadelphia cover badly damaged, OX7 on incoming covers from England, India and Ceylon, OX7 var. (gray brown), two singles on local New York City cover and OX10 on incoming damaged registered use from India; F.-V.F., a fascinating group.

Lot 1603    

Official Seal, 1888, chocolate. Tied to reclose 2¢ entire opened in error, cancelled by "New York Mar 7 90" duplex and addressed locally, reverse with additional yellow carrier label requesting better address, purple returned to writer handstamp, Fine, one of only two recorded combination usages with post office and carrier seals.

Official Seal, 1888, chocolate brown, Imperforate. First printing, complete sheet of 72, without gum, rich color, corner nick at top left into stamp and tears at bottom affecting three seals, otherwise Very Fine, only a small number of imperforate panes are known from the first printing.

Official Seal, 1889, bister brown. Affixed to reclosed a 2¢ Grant (U293) lettersheet addressed to New York City, seal tied by New York duplex on reverse; slight soiling, Fine, the only recorded use of a repair seal on a Grant Letter sheet.

Official Seal, 1889, bister brown. Used on a slightly damaged cover from the Cape of Good Hope bearing Cape 1d carmine, two pairs and single, to Denver Col., purple "Received in bad order…" handstamp, Very Fine.
