Official Seal, 1936, gray black, perf 12½. Two singles reclose cover opened in error bearing 2¢ carmine (554) tied by "Milwaukee Wis. Nov 14 1927" machine cancel on cover to Pickford Mich., forwarded to Cedarville and finally Ann Arbor, Very Fine, this is the only recorded examples of the type 5 seal on or off cover.

Official Seal, 1936, gray black, perf 12x9½. Block of 10, o.g., some gum streaks, perfs clipped bottom left, F.-V.F., this block contains all recorded examples of type 7.

Official Seal, 1936, gray black, perf 11½. A massive application of 12 type 4 seals to repair a bulky triple rate letter bearing three 3¢ purple (941) singles tied by "San Francisco Cal. Sep 10 1946" duplex to Brownwood Tex., fresh and Very Fine, the only recorded use of the type 4 seals.

Lot 1673    

Official Seal, 1947, gray black, perf 8½x8. Four seals used to seal flap of cover opened in error, tied by "Anderson Mo. Mar 10 1948" purple cds, mailed with #C33 tied by "Los Angeles Mar 2 1948" machine cancel, returned to sender for better address, Fine, one of only two recorded covers.

Lot 1674    

Official Seal, 1947, gray black, perf 8x8½. Used to close the halves of a 1¢ postal reply card to Elgin N.J., sent by a collector requesting an Elgin postmark, postmaster applied the "Elgin Ohio May 22 1950" duplex and folded the card over and closed it with the seal, Very Fine, one of only two recorded examples of this seal type (both on cover).

Official Seal, 1948, gray black, perf 8½. Pane of 10, o.g., right two hinged, one with thin spot, Very Fine appearance, the only recorded example of this format in pane of 10.

Post Office Seal, 1948, gray black, hyphen-hole perf 9½, Experimental Booklet Panes. Group of 3 items comprising OX38 booklet panes of five with the "16-56146-1 GPO" imprint, one on soft gray paper (one of six recorded) and one on thick cream paper (the only recorded example), both o.g., lightly hinged, a March 4, 1942 cover bearing bottom seal from a pane of five on thick cream paper, tied on back by "Opened in Dead Letter Branch, Des Moines, Iowa", the only recorded use of these seals (date is consistent with the use of the type 10-14 seals and predates the issue of 1949 by seven years), Very Fine, a unique and important exhibition group, all illustrated and discussed in Kotanchik (proof.164).

The post office began to experiment with the use of hyphen hole perforating and booklet formats in vertical pane of five seals, as early as 1942, demonstrated by the cover offered here. The experimental panes are characterized by the inscription in the top selvage that reads "16-56146-1 GPO" rather than "16-56164 GPO" that was used for the 1949 and 1968 issues.

Official Seal, 1950, gray black, hyphen-hole perf 9½ x imperf. Complete three exhibition pages including panes of five, imperf and extra varieties in sheet and panes of five, five covers including registered parcel tag, UX27 and only recorded wrapper use, Very Fine and interesting group.

Lot 1678    

Post Office Seal, 1958, experimental adhesive tape. Tape strip used to seal a 1958 legal size cover bearing 4¢ #1117 strip of three tied by "Chicago Ill 1958" double-circle postmarks; two additional off-cover strips accompanies, Very Fine, these two strips are the only recorded examples of this experimental seal.

The official seal tapes were only distributed to Chicago and used only briefly. Hank VanLaar, an employee in the Chicago Post Office at the time wrote in 1988, "This tape was an experiment by the POD back in the '60s…I think there were six roles in the box and they were used up in a few weeks".

Balance of 1968-72 Issues. Complete exhibit section of 9 mounted pages with unused multiples and perf varieties, 11 covers comprising uses of each type including OX40 Oct. 10, 1968 EKU use and including the 1979 unique use of a photocopied 1972 issue seal used to close a letter missent to the Ohio Department of Taxation (see Kotanchik proof. 179); a Very Fine and choice group.
