Lot 1842    

Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, Stone 2, ample to large margins, minor gums stains and tiny scuffs, tied by "Pensacola, Fla./May 20" (1862) circular datestamp on small cover to Shelby Ala. with black mourning trim on flaps, small erosion spot at center, otherwise Fine; with 2001 C.S.A. certificate.
Scott No. 1    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

The earliest of four reported Pensacola Evacuation covers sent ten days after the fall of Pensacola to Union forces, the postmaster evacuated north toward Pollard, Alabama, and used his postmarking device on the way, the four dates known are May 20, 24, 25 and 28 (all 1862).

Lot 1843    

Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, horizontal pair, franking on three covers from correspondence from Capt. W.B. Thomas to his mother in Augusta, Ga., each tied by blue Norfolk, Va. cds, each with original enclosure datelined from Pig Point (defenses along the Nansemond River on the south side of Hampton Roads), first letter of January 3, 1862 mentions "Humphrey Marshall's army" in Kentucky, second letter of January 30 contain interesting war preparation details about Burnside's North Carolina campaign…I hope your fears about the Burnside expedition are groundless and I hope instead of being in Pamlico Sound the ships are at the bottom (of the ocean) with mention of the storm, third letter of February 21st with interesting content…Our iron clad war vessel (the scuttled Union Merrimac, raised and rechristened the Virginia by the Confederates) is now finished and lying in the stream at Norfolk ready to come down the harbour. I do not know on what day she will make her attack on the Yankee ships opposite us., mentions other war events, etc.; some cover flaws, one with portion of stamp missing, Fine, accompanied by transcript and historical background.

Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, Stone 2 (huge margins including bottom sheet margin & part of stamp at right), tied by neat Mt. Carmel, S.C., Mar 22 (1862) cds on cover to Sullivan Island, Charleston, bottom back flap missing, Extremely Fine and choice, a Beauty.

Lot 1846    

Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, tied by one of two strikes faint Raleigh, N.C. cds on underpaid cover to Gainesville Ala., clear "Due/5" handstamp, F.-V.F., The 5¢ letter rate was for mail traveling a distance of no more than 500 miles. Gainesville was about 700 miles from Raleigh and the rate should have been 10¢.

Carmichael care of Dr. S.W. Carmichael, Hospital Confed Army Culpeper Court House, Virginia, Very Fine, Detailed bio included from the unpublished biographical register of physicians who served the Confederacy in a medical capacity., ex-Hambrecht.
