Lot 1862    

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ green, right margin strip of 3, tied by grid handstamps on 1862 folded letter to the Central Committee of Relief in Seguin, Guadalupe City, matching "New Braunfels, Tex., Dec 5" cds, letter giving information regarding distribution of relief funds to aid familes of newborn children and other charitable purposes; cover with stamp missing at right and natural paper wrinkle in right stamp, Very Fine appearance, accompanied by transcript and historical background; with 1998 C.S.A. certificate.

The Confederacy had nothing as organized as the Union's U.S. Sanitary Commission or other related organizations to aid soldiers, widows and war-torn families. Locally formed committees were the only Confederate organizations that provided aid to war torn families residing within the Confederacy. Correspondences such as this provide the only remaining glimpses into the operations of these organizations.

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ green, four margins, tied by light Savannah, Geo./Sep. 26 cds on drop cover addressed to Lt. Col. Mitchell, 29th Regt, Savannah; few light "bleached" spots, reduced a bit at right, otherwise Very Fine; with 1994 PSE certificate.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, block of 4, o.g., lightly hinged (bottom pair n.h.), four margins including partial sheet margin at left, thin spots affecting top stamps, light horizontal crease between stamps, just touching lower left stamp; fresh, Very Fine appearance.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, corner sheet margin vertical pair, huge sheet margin slightly overlapping cover at top, tied by "Richmond, Va., Apr 21, 1862" cds's on small cover to Kingston, La.; sealed internal cover tear which just affects bottom stamp, otherwise Very Fine, a spectacular sheet margin pair on cover.
