Danish West Indies, Whitmore & Co., St. Thomas, Forwarded By, clear oval handstamp on 1836 folded letter to addressed to Rev. Benjamin Hale in St. Croix, D.W.I.; some faint toning, otherwise Very Fine, the earliest recorded example of this forwarder handstamp.

Danish West Indies, Koefoed Whitmore & Co., St. Thomas W.I., Forwarded By, clear sharp red oval handstamp on folded letter datelined "New York, August 31st, 1860" addressed to St. Domingo City, Dominican Republic with "Foreign Letter Office, St. Thomas" oval handstamp on reverse, Very Fine.

Danish West Indies, Spanish West Indies Mailboat "D26", sharp bold oily strike of oval barred obliterator tying G.B. 1865, 4d vermilion on folded letter sheet to Fort Lee, N.J., manuscript "Due 10¢" and stamp additionally tied by "N.Y. Steamship, 10, Dec 10" cds, reverse with "Spanish Mail Packet, A, No 8, 68" and "St. Thomas, No 17, 68" backstamps; cover with expert reinforcement or restoration in corners and folds, otherwise Very Fine, One of Only Two Covers and the Unique Usage Canceling a British Stamp on Cover, pictured in Stone's A Caribbean Nepture (pg 111); Spectacular Strike of the Spanish West Indies Mailboat "D26" Obliterator,

This cover was post at Santo Domingo, at the docks aboard the Herrera Line Spanish ship S.S. Moctezuma, which departed on the 9th and arrived in St. Thomas on the 17th of November. There it was sent by British Packet to New York via Havana. This cover is one of two known, the other bearing a Spanish franking and is addressed to Havana. The "D26" barred oval is among the rarest of all British Used Aboard cancellations, as approximately 20 British stamps are known bearing this cancellation.

Danish West Indies, 1871 St. Thomas to Genova, Italy, commercial folded letter with manuscript manuscript "via Southampton" routing endorsement, reverse with "St. Thomas, De 14, 71" origin and red London transit cds's, Italy 1870, 1l + 40c + 30c Postage Dues tied by "Genova, 31 Dic, 71" cds's; stamps with a few edge flaws, otherwise Very Fine, a scarce destination and postage due usage.

Danish West Indies, 1861, 3¢ rose, horizontal strip of six, in combination with 1863, 2¢ black on incoming double rate cover from St. Thomas, Danish West Indies to Vinal Haven, Me., tied by "N. York, Steamship, Dec 23" cds's with light "St. Thomas, 16/12, 1867" origin cds additionally tying 3¢ strip; stamp edge flaws and some light tone spots, small cover tear at bottom right, otherwise F.-V.F., a rare and unique usage from St. Thomas.

Danish West Indies, 1861, 3¢ rose, irregular block of three, in combination with 1831, 2¢ black on cover overpaying the 10¢ West Indian rate from Saint Barthelemy, West Indies to Maine, all tied by "N. York, Steamship" circular handstamps, reverse with "St. Bart, W.I., May 10, 65" docketing in pencil; cover slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, a very scarce origin and unusual usage.

Saint Barthelemy, about 100 miles east of St. Thomas, is a small island in the Leeward Islands which was under Swedish control untill it was ceded to France in the late 1860's and now is part of the French West Indies.

Danish West Indies, 1867, 10¢ green, E. grill, canceled by "New-York Sep. 21" circular datestamp on incoming 1868 folded letter sheet from La Guayra, Venezuela sent via Danish West Indies, "St. Thomas, 11/9 1868" transit cds and blue La Guayra company handstamp; some wear, Very Fine, a rare usage from Venazuela via St. Thomas.

Danish West Indies, 1866, 3¢ rose, imperf, margins large to just shaving design at left, tied by "St. Thomas, 16/12, 1867" cds on large part of rebacked cover front to Phialdelphia, Pa., manuscript "Brazil Steamer" endorsement and "Steamship 20" circular rate handstamp applied upon arrival in New York, Very Fine, one of Two Examples Known of the 1856-66, 3¢ Issue Canceled By the St. Thomas Circular Datestamp Rather Than the Usual Target Cancellation instead of the ring target killer, illustrated in Engstrom Danish West Indies Mails, 1754-1917, Volume 1 (page 4-41).
Scott No. 2    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

This letter, missing the regular U.S. mail packet by two days, was sent by U.S. merchant packet with D.W.I. postage paid but U.S. postage unpaid. The arrival rate handstamp indicate a double rate letter however the sender only postaged the letter with a single 3¢ D.W.I. stamp.

Danish West Indies, 1874, 3¢ blue & carmine, tied by "St. Thomas, 23/4, 1883" cds on Austria 1876, 2kr brown, postal card to St. Thomas and returned back to sender, card uprated with Austria 1876, 2kr yellow, strip of three tied by "Graz, 22/3, 83" cds's, with additional "Graz, 16/5, 83" receiving cds's, Very Fine, a colorful and rare combination.
