Transatlantic Mail from Great Britain (1848 to 1850)

1849 (Aug. 10) London, England to Washington, D.C., folded cover with red London (8.10) cds and manuscript "4/" shilling prepaid rating for quadruple packet rate, red manuscript "20" cent credit to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Canada from Liverpool Aug. 11 to New York arriving Aug. 25, New York red "Paid/Ship" overstruck with black strike, additional "Paid" in arc h.s. and magenta "96" cent prepayment restatement, F.-V.F., The only recorded letter bearing the "Paid/Ship" marking in both colors.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The purpose of the "Paid/Ship" marking is not really understood. It is found used infrequently from March 1849 until February 1859. New York marked 4 x 24¢ = 96¢ paid in magenta ink along with curved red handstamp "Paid".

1850 (Jun. 7) Glasgow, Scotland to Philadelphia, Pa., blue folded letter with "Glasgow L" special circular late fee marking and bearing GB 1841, 1d red brown, three margins, slightly in at right, tied by "159" grid cancel prepaying the 1d late fee, Glasgow (6.7) and Liverpool (6.8) backstamps, "19/Cents" debit h.s. to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Liverpool Jun. 8 and arriving New York Jun. 23, no New York markings, Philadelphia blue "24" cents crude due h.s. for packet fee, Very Fine.

Lot 448    

1850 (Dec. 27) Liverpool, England to New Orleans, La., folded letter endorsed "Atlantic" and bearing GB 1s green embossed issue, cut to shape, cancelled by "466" barred oval, Liverpool (12.28) origin backstamp, red "21cents" credit handstamp, carried by Collins Line Atlantic from Liverpool Dec. 28 but broke shaft and returned, then carried by Cunard Line Africa to New York arriving Feb. 15, New York red "Am Packet 'Paid 24' Feb 16" exchange cds, Very Fine, a very scarce interrupted mail voyage.

The Collins Line "Atlantic" broke a shaft on January 6, 1851 about 900 miles from Halifax, and returned to Liverpool under sail arriving on January 22. Mails were transferred to the Cunard steamship "Africa".
