1860 (Mar. 31) New Orleans, La. to Brugg, Switzerland, printed circular sent in French mails at the newspaper rate prepaid by 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, horizontal pair, some clipped perfs causing s.e. at left, tied by "New Orleans La. Apr 3, 1860" cds, carried by Cunard Line Arabia New York Apr. 11th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 22nd, red French (4.23) entry cds, Brugg (4.25) arrival backstamp and Swiss red crayon "20" rappen due rating for mail sent via England; some light perf toning, clean and Very Fine.
Scott No. 24    Estimate $200 - 300.

Printed circulars to Switzerland, transported directly to France, were charged 15 rappen in Switzerland, while those sent via England required 20 rappen.

Lot 728    

1860 (Jul. 28) New York, N.Y. to Bremen, printed prices current of H.D. Hull & Co. prepaid by 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, two singles, rich color, tied by "New York Jul 28" cds, carried by Vanderbilt Line Vanderbilt from New York Jul. 28th to Havre arriving Aug. 7th, blue Havre (8.7) entry cds, Bremen (8.10) arrival backstamp and blue manuscript "4" grote postage due rating, clean and Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Circular travelled from Havre to Bremen by the Thurn & Taxis Post, a service that had been set up in the early 1820s when sailing packet service from New York to Havre began. Since the early 1850s most mail to Germany, however, did not go by this route, but by the regular German mail services under the Prussian, Bremen, and Hamburg treaties.

1860 (Nov. 24) New Orleans, La. to Brugg, Switzerland, printed circular sent in French mails at the newspaper rate prepaid by 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, horizontal pair, tied by "New Orleans La. Nov. 24, 1860" cds, carried by Havre Line Arago New York Dec. 8th to Havre arriving Dec. 22nd, blue Havre (12.22) entry cds, Brugg (12.24) arrival backstamp and Swiss red crayon "15" rappen due rating for mail sent direct to France; Extremely Fine and choice use.
Scott No. 24    Estimate $300 - 400.

Printed circulars to Switzerland, transported directly to France, were charged 15 rappen in Switzerland, while those sent via England required 20 rappen. The former are very uncommon. Swiss marked the postage due of 15 rappen, as they usually did, in red pencil in the center of the cover.

1862 (Mar. 11) New York, N.Y. to Basel, Switzerland, printed circular outer sheet at the 2¢ French Mails newspaper rate prepaid by 1861, 1¢ blue, horizontal pair, tied by "New-York Mar 12" double circle date stamp, carried by Cunard Line Arabia from New York Mar. 12 to Queenstown arriving Mar. 24, red crayon "20" rappen due rating for French mail via England, Very Fine, the only recorded circular to Switzerland franked with 1¢ 1861 issue.

Lot 731    

1865 (Feb. 10) New York, N.Y. to St. Etienne, France, printed circular at 2¢ printed matter rate prepaid by 1863, 2¢ black, exceptionally well centered, tied by geometric cancel, carried by NGL Line America from New York Feb. 11 to Southampton arriving Feb. 23, red French entry also ties 2¢ and matching red "15" centimes due h.s., Extremely Fine and choice.
Scott No. 73    Estimate $300 - 400.

Paris used an old 15 decimes handstamp, struck in red, to indicate the postage due, and wrote in pen "cleaned"for centimes. The sender noted in bright red ink that this was an "Open printed Circular" because, as viewed through the paper, it appeared to be a handwritten letter. Actually, it was printed in a manuscript style.

1865 (Apr. 1) New York, N.Y. to Andeer, Gaubunden Canton, Switzerland, large newspaper wrapper with large red "Paid All" of New York, carried by Hapag Line Borussia from New York Apr. 1 to Southampton Apr. 13, blue Aachen "Franco Preuss: respVereinsl:Ausg:Gr." framed h.s. indicating prepaid only to border, Prussian "2" sgr. due rating, Fine, one of only three recorded newspaper wrappers by Prussian Mail to Switzerland; with 1999 van der Linden certificate.

1865 (Aug. 4) New York, N.Y. to Greifswald, Prussia, printed circular outer sheet at 2¢ printed matter rate prepaid by 1863, 2¢ black tied by NYCM star cancel and black "Paid All" straightline h.s., carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from New York Aug. 5 to Hamburg arriving Aug. 18, reverse with Aug. 20 backstamp, Very Fine.
Scott No. 73    Estimate $200 - 300.

Circular paid printed matter rate to Hamburg when the rate to Prussia via Hamburg was 3¢. Although underpaid by 1¢, circular allowed to go through since New York marked PAID ALL handstamp in black ink across adhesive.

Lot 734    

1865 (Dec. 16) New York, N.Y. to Vienna, Austria, orange newspaper wrapper endorsed "Germany via Bremen", bearing 1861, 3¢ rose, nat. s.e. at right, tied by cork cancel, New York large "Paid All" straightline applied, carried by NGL Line Bremen from New York Dec. 16th to Bremerhaven arriving Dec. 29th, blue "Bremen Franco" transit also ties 3¢, red crayon "2" kreuzer due, Vienna (1.2, 1.3) arrival backstamps; light file fold at left, Fine and scarce 3¢ use.
Scott No. 65    Estimate $300 - 400.

Newspapers sent by either the Bremen or Hamburg Lines required 3¢ prepayment, which was to fully pay the newspaper to another part of the German-Austrian Postal Union. Apparently, the Austrians collected an additional 2 kreuzer local charge. Large 43x9 mm. PAID ALL applied at New York.

Lot 735    

1866-67 (circa) New York, N.Y. to Rio grande do Sul, Brazil, printed circular endorsed "pr Guilding Star via Rio de Janeiro" and prepaid with 1861, 3¢ rose, horizontal pair, tied by NYFM geometrics, blue crayon "40" reis postage due rating, Very Fine, an exceedingly scarce printed matter use to South America.
Scott No. 65    Estimate $400 - 600.

The 6¢ postage prepaid the rate for 6-9 unsealed circulars. This was the domestic rate required for circulars sent by steamship to a country with which U.S. had no convention. Although the exact date can not be determined, Guiding Star made only three round voyages for the line departing New York on 22 September 1866, 21 December 1866, and 23 September 1867.

Wright's New York Cotton Circular sent by Kremelberg & Co. of New York at the 2¢ printed matter rate paid to destination with 1873, 2¢ black tied by NYCM circle of wedges, New York large red "½" (silbergroschen) h.s. credit to Bremen, carried by NGL Line New York from New York to Bremerhaven, blue "America/über Bremen/Franco" transit, Very Fine.

Pencil "12/30" numbers appear to be docketing date of origin or reception, but don't line up with an sailing of the "New York".
