1830 (Oct. 3) Marseille, France to Boston, Mass., printed circular marked with 5 centimes Timbres Royal fiscal tax stamp (upper right) and Timbres l'Extraordinaire handstamp (lower right) showing tax recorded in Bouches du Rhone Department. Circular carried privately to ship in Havre, then by Union Line Formosa Oct. 20 to New York arriving Nov. 17, red "New-York Nov 17" cds with matching "Ship" handstamp, postage due of 1½¢ not shown, Very Fine, a scarce early printed matter from France to the United States.

1841 (Sep. 23) Huntly, Scotland to Baltimore, Md., newspaper wrapper with "Huntly SE 23 1841" origin backstamp and red manuscript "Paid 2d" rating, red London "Paid" Sep 24 1841" cds, carried by Cunard Line Columbia from Liverpool Oct. 5 to Boston arriving Oct. 21, postage due of 1½¢ for circular rate traveling not more than 100 miles and in state; edge faults, Fine, an early transatlantic newspaper wrapper.

Burnham & Co. printed circular with red oval "printed report." handstamp, taken directly to steamship bypassing Cuban mails, carried by U.S. Mail Steamship Co. Ohio from Havana Oct. 8 to New York arriving Oct. 13, red "New-York Oct 15" cds and large red circled "6" rating h.s. consisting of 3¢ for a single circular arriving from the Caribbean plus 3¢ inland circular rate postage, Very Fine.

Mordecai Isabel from Havana Oct. 8 to Charleston arriving Oct. 11, Charleston large red "6" rating h.s. consisting of 3¢ for a single circular arriving from the Caribbean plus 3¢ inland circular rate postage; some age spotting, Very Fine.

1852 (Jul. 9) Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y., printed "Freight Circular", forwarding agent "Samuel & Pearce" oval origin backstamp, imprint of red GB 1d newspaper tax stamp on circular, red "Paid at Liverpool, JY 10 1852" framed origin d.s. and matching large "1" penny prepaid rate handstamp applied for reduced circular rate abroad, carried by America from Liverpool Jul. 10 to Boston arriving Jul. 22, Very Fine and scarce intact wrapper use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Printed circular sent as newspaper in printed wrapper, open at both ends for post office inspection. Very few wrappers with enclosures have survived intact as wrappers were usually separated from enclosures and discarded.

Lot 764    

1853 (May 5) Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y., printed circular with imprinted red 1d newspaper tax stamp and bearing Great Britain 1841 1d red, large margins except just clear at right, tied by "486" grid cancel, carried by Cunard Line Africa from Liverpool May 7 to New York arriving May 19; file fold at center affects 1d red, otherwise Very Fine.

Since 1837, Prices Current and Commercial Lists published regularly could be sent by British packet for one penny each. Each business desiring to use this special rate had to be recorded at the Post Office in London. W.A. & G. Maxwell & Co. printed their prices current on stamped paper (revenue tax stamp impressed with their name) to send the circulars free through the British mails. The additional overseas postage was paid with a one penny adhesive. The U.S.-G.B. Treaty did not address circulars specifically, but It is believed they were treated as newspapers with 2¢ to be collected in the U.S.

1853 (Sep. 9) Liverpool, England to New Orleans, La., printed circular with red 1d newspaper tax handstamp on backflap, red "Paid at Liverpool SP 10 1853" d.s. and matching "1" pence prepaid rating h.s., carried by Cunard Line Africa from Liverpool Sep. 10 to New York arriving Sep. 22, Very Fine.

1854 (Oct. 9 c.) Cuba to Montreal, Canada via New York, printed circular outer sheet probably from Havana with "Printed Circular" straightline h.s., carried by US Mail S.S. Co. Crescent City from Havana Oct. 9 to New York arriving Oct. 14, "New York, 2" circular debit h.s., Canada "2½" pence due rating, Montreal (10.18) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, a scarce printed matter use from beyond the U.S. to Canada.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

New York debited Canada 2¢ for unpaid circular arriving from Cuba and sent to U.S.-Canadian border. Canada added one penny sterling for a total postage due of 2 pence sterling or 2½ pence currency.

Lot 767 ()   

1855 (Apr. 22) Aachen, Prussia to New York, N.Y., newspaper wrapper front with red Aachen (4.22) origin cds and matching "Paid All" framed h.s., Prussian red manuscript "4" cent credit to U.S., carried by Ocean Line Hermann from Southampton Apr. 25 to New York arriving May 9, pencil "1" at left, Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

One newspaper wrapper paid 2½ silbergroschen under U.S.-Prussian convention of 1852. This paid the printed matter to its destination. Only newspapers were allowed as printed matter under this convention and no other forms such as printed circulars. Four other wrappers with printed address labels from this sender in Aachen are recorded. Printed matter under the Prussian closed mail convention is quite scarce.

1855 (May 21) Matanzas, Cuba to Boston, Mass. via New York, printed circular carried by U.S. Mail S.S. Co. from Havana May 23 to New York arriving May 28, New York large black "2" cent due rating, clean and Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

New York marked 2¢ postage due for the U.S. printed matter rate for an unpaid circular sent to any part of the U.S. established by the Postal Act of August 30, 1852.
