1870, 2¢ Red Brown, Split Grills, horizontal pair, used with 6¢ carmine, strip of three, single short perf, tied by three beautiful strikes of NYFM fancy star geometrics (Weiss ST-8P10) on 1873 cover with preprinted Pearson address to Lima, Peru, red "New York '12' Apr 19" exchange credit cds, endorsed "Per Steamer 'Ocean Queen' "; Extremely Fine, a choice New York foreign mail usage from the Pearson correspondence to Peru., ex-Moody, Barwis; with 2003 P.F. Certificate.

1870, 10¢ Brown, "I" Grill, showing bold grill impression of late state "I" grill, single perf flaw, tied by strong strike of cross-roads on blue 1874 folded letter to Costa Rica, magenta "San Francisco Cal, Paid, Oct 17" exchange cds, blue Hellmann Bros. merchant handstamp, couple minor cover flaws including light horizontal file fold, a Very Fine and rare use.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED 10¢ I. GRILL USAGES.

The Scott catalog recently added separate listings for I. grills used on the 1870 issue. The "I" grills are usually well impressed and measure about 10 to 11 by 10 to 13 points. The "I" grills can be separated into early state and late state based on the shape of the tip of the grill. Early state grills show small tip of the pyramid, while late state grills show the pyramid tips truncated and flat. The Scott catalog does not currently assign a value to on cover usages.

1870, 12¢ Dull Violet, Grilled, pretty pastel color, beautiful strike of red NYFM supplementary mail cross-roads cancel, two small thin spots, Fine and very attractive; with 1970 P.F. certificate.

Sep 9" cds on legal size cover to Talbotton, Ga., franked along with Revenue 10¢ Inland Exchange stamp, uncancelled and cover showing "Due 3" straightline handstamp; light vertical fold affects 5¢, F.-V.F., an unusual attempted revenue use.

1873, 6¢ Dull Pink, used with 1873, 3¢ green, both tied by French auxiliary "Trouve a la Boite/ P. 35" (Found in the Box) framed marking on 1874 cover to Paris, France, red "New York 'Paid' Aug 25" exchange cds, blue Brest (9.7) entry cds and small red "PD" framed h.s., "Forwarded by Munroe & Co." oval backstamp and remailed with France 15c. ceres perf. issue to Paris street address; flap tear, Very Fine, an unusual use with the French auxiliary marking tying the stamps.
