1882, 5¢ Yellow Brown, horizontal strip of three, used with 1883, 2¢ red brown, strip tied between perfs by neat cork cork cancels, matching "Dover N.J. Jun. 30" cds on cover to Potosi, Bolivia in care of the Royal Silver Mines of Potosi, 1887 New York backstamp, few small edge repairs are barely noticeable, Very Fine and rare usage, ex-Mercedes.

1881, 1¢ Gray Blue, Re-Engraved, tied by Glen Allen printed star precancel and rim of "Glen Allen Virginia, Feb 14, 1885" cds on large oversized blue illustrated cover showing Cussons, May & Sheppard building in Glen Allen Va., addressed to Bordentown N.J.; small tone spot barely affects stamp, Very Fine.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED GLEN ALLEN PRECANCEL USE ON AN ILLUSTRATED CUSSONS, MAY & SHEPPARD ENVELOPE.

There are about six recorded large size Glen Allen Va. usages. This use is unusual with the circular datestamp also tying the stamp.

1883, 2¢ Red Brown, overlapping 2¢ orange (R15) and tied by cork cancel duplexed with "Rome N.Y. Mar 3" cds on cover to Newburgh, N.Y., R15 with additional manuscript cancel, Very Fine and unusual.

The sender apparently tried to prepay the postage with a revenue stamp, the postmaster held the cover for payment.

1883, 4¢ Blue Green, horizontal pair, perfs slightly trimmed from edge placement, used with 1882, 5¢ Garfield, cancelled by corks on registered 2¢ red brown entire to Germany, matching "Vevay Ind. Aug 16, 1887" cds, New York registry label (FX-NY1) affixed, New York (8.18) and German (8.30) backstamps; reduced a bit at left, otherwise Very Fine and scarce use.

1888, 4¢ Carmine, Vertical Bisect, s.e. at left, tied by "Philadelphia Pa. Mar 12 '90" duplex on small local cover addressed to 220 Vine St., sharp "Due 2" handstamp and additional blue crayon "4", uncancelled 1891, 2¢ red brown postage due (J16) affixed; opened at left and top, Very Fine.

A REMARKABLE AND UNIQUE 4¢ CARMINE 1888 ISSUE BISECT USE THAT WAS NOT ACCEPTED BY THE PHILADELPHIA POST OFFICE RESULTING IN POSTAGE DUE.

Even though bisects were deemed illegal, post offices generally tolerated and accepted them as payment of postage. We know of only a few examples during the large banknote issue period where the post office did not accept the bisects.
