Confederacy, Fort Valley Ga., 3¢ Black Entire, clear strikes of "Fort Valley Ga." control circle and "Paid 3" rate handstamps, entered mails with "Fort Valley Ga. Apr 12" cds on 1861 cover to New Orleans La., backflap removed, rough opening at top and slightly toned, Fine, ex-Hall, Agre; with 2002 C.S.A. certificate. C.S.A. Catalog No. A-FTV-GA-E01.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE FORT VALLEY 3¢ PROVISIONAL ENTIRE.

This cover is dated April 12, 1861, the day the first guns of war were fired on Fort Sumter.

The 3¢ provisionals were issued by postmasters in Confederate States prior to the establishment of the Confederate postal system. This Fort Valley entire was originally acquired by the Halls in 1924 for $5 from Nassau Stamp Co. and initialed "JAK" by John A. Klemann on the reverse. Another example of the "Paid 3" entire (without control mark) was offered in the Kohn CSA collection (Siegel Oct. 29, 1970, lot 35), dated Mar. 19, 1861, to the same addressee. A third 3¢ entire recently surfaced with original letter dated July 6, 1861 with control circle and revalued with 5¢ ratemarker.

Confederacy, Fort Valley Ga., 5¢ on 3¢ Black, clear strikes of "Paid 3" U.S. rate and "Fort Valley Ga." provisional control circle and revalued with a "5" rate handstamp on orange cover to Eufala Ala., with contents datelined "Fort Valley July 6th 1861", light stain at left, some edge wear with corner flaw, F.-V.F.; with 2012 C.S.A. certificate.

This revalued 5¢ provisional entire was recently listed in the new CSA handbook. There are two known Fort Valley 3¢ provisional entires: April 12, 1851 offered in the Hall sale and a third without the control mark dated March 19, 1861 was offered in the Kohn sale.

Official Business" imprint cover to New Braunfels Tex., neat "Austin Tex. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 5¢ BATON ROUGE PROVISIONAL WITH CRISS-CROSS BORDER.

Crown recorded only eleven covers with this Baton Rouge provisional stamp, all being single frankings.

The recipient's military unit was on guard duty at Atchafalaya River and Bayou Teche from October 1861 thru February 1862.

Oct 13 1861" cds and re-rated with matching "Paid 5" circular handstamp to Athens Tenn., small repairs along top of cover and part of flap replaced, Very Fine appearance, ex-Walcott, Everett, Boshwit.

This entire is woefully undercataloged by Scott due to its great rarity. We have not previously offered an example, and a recent search of auction sales failed to turn up an example offered.
