Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Blue (four margins, clipped corner & some staining), tied indistinct cds on cover addressed to Surgeons - McDowell/ -- Gillespie, Medical Examining Board, Grenada Hospital, Grenada Miss[issippi], bit reduced at left, small tear at right, and file crease across top faintly through stamp, Fine, Featured in Terry Hambrecht's article in the March-April 1987 Confederate Philatelist, page 9 where he points out that examining boards helped elevate the quality of medical care but often left something to be desired, upon which he expounds in more detail. Detailed bio on Gillespie included from the unpublished biographical register of physicians who served the Confederacy in a medical capacity., ex-Hambrecht (no photo).

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Milky Blue, plate number "2" block of ten, beautiful color on bright paper, full to large margins, unused, fresh and Very Fine, This was the first state lacking the imprint.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Greenish Blue, vertical pair, four margins all around, tied by the "Richmond, Va Jan 1" (Powell Type 5f) on light coarse paper cover addressed to Mrs. Capt J. J. Allen, Waskey's Mills Botetourt Co., Va., Very Fine double rate cover.
Scott No. 11c    Estimate $150 - 200.

John James Allen (b1831) enlisted as a private in Co K 57th Va Inf 6/10/1861 and was promoted Capt 7/20/1861. He was wounded at Malvern Hill 7/1/1862 losing an arm. He resigned 8/23/1862 on account of his wound. After the war, he was a lawyer, judge, and a legislator for Botetourt County.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Blue, Die A, Perforated, Block of Four, dark shade and fine impression, each stamp cancelled by open grid, possibly an army field office grid, but also similar to the device used at Brookhaven Miss. where perforated stamps are known to have originated, Fine and extremely rare used block; with 2006 C.S.A. certificate.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Blue, Harrisonburg Va. Roulette, roulettes on three sides, straight edge at right, deep shade, unused, light vertical crease ends in tiny tear, Fine, a very rare Harrisonburg roulette pair.; with 2009 C.S.A. certificate.
Scott No. 11 var.    Estimate $300 - 400.

The Harrisonburg Va. roulettes were used from post offices in the surrounding Shenandoah Valley area and are known as the "Shenandoah Separations".
