Bryant & Stratton Colleges were founded in over 50 cities in the United States by students of Spencer. Spencer was involved with the institution serving as a partner and teacher at the school which originally focused on bookkeeping and standardized penmanship.

(Spencerian Script) Platt R. Spencer, stylized addressing on cover to his wife Mrs. Spencer in Genova, O., franked with 1851, 3¢ deep orange brown (margins large to just touching) tied by red "Jefferson, O., Nov 18" cds, Extremely Fine.
Scott No. 10A    Estimate $200 - 300.

Platt R. Spencer, a reformed alcoholic, developed a distinctive copper plate style of writing for the American business community, based on the thick and thin stroke of the new steel pens. The style is demonstrated in the address, written by its originator.
