Panama, Colombia 1881, Registration, 10c red on orange, manuscript "973" registry number, used with Colombia 1883 10c orange yellow, tied by "Colon, Oct 2" duplex on special registration envelope to France, red "Panama, Lig. A. Paq. Fr. No 1, 2 Oct 84" octagon d.s., reverse with Bordeaux (10.25) arrival cds, Very Fine.

A REMARKABLE EARLY REGISTERED USE FROM COLON, PANAMA CARRIED BY FRENCH PACKET TO FRANCE.

Presumably the special registration envelopes and Colombia F7 were sent to Colon in 1881, but no Colon registered covers are recorded from 1881 and 1882. This is one of the earliest recorded registered covers from Colon, of which only a few are known from the 1880s.

The 1895 Colon registration total would be less than 2,250. This compares with 5,500 for Panama.

This is the earliest recorded cover showing the new 20c registry fee, which is believed to have been effective sometime in mid-April.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THESE TWO STAMPS FROM ANY POST OFFICE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PANAMA.

Colon received a supply of Colombia F13 and H3 early in 1903. Although Panama also received Colombia F17, there is no indication that F17 was ever sent to Colon.
