D.W. Harrier's Express., Paid., fancy boxed frank (HAR-001) on 1860 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, canceled by blue Wells, Fargo & Co., Nevada, Sep 20 oval date stamp; reduced at right into indicia, otherwise Very Fine, the finer of two known examples of this express frank, ex Dale-Lichtenstein.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

D.W. Harrier operated his express from 1864 to 1865 in Nevada City, connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co., and served the mining camps between there and Moore's Flat and Bloomfield.

Hastings' Express., Paid., second type pony express rider frank (HAS-002) on cover to Portland, O.T., manuscript "$82.00 Coin" money package notation; significant reduction at right possibly removing a government franking, Fine appearance, one of five known examples of this short-lived Oregon express; with 2003 P.S.E. certificate.

Hiram Lusk, Forerunner To Rhodes & Lusk's Express, 1850 folded letter addressed to Martini Ranch, Scotts River, letter datelined "Sact 'Cty, Cal., April the 6th 1850" with postscript…Hiram Lusk carries the express from hear to Shasta and you can send with safety when you give to him. take (?) Receit for it to be delivered (at) Willcolons and Co. Sact city, Cal.; cover soiling, Fine, a fascinating and early historical account of this early expressman.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Hiram Lusk is known to have started Rhodes & Lusk's Express with James. H. Rhodes in 1852 which operated daily from Sacramento where they connected with Wells, Fargo & Co. to Marysville, Tehama, Shasta, Yreka, Weaverville and into southern Oregon.

J.W. Hoag & Co.'s Contra Costa Express, San Francisco, full bold strike of red oval handstamp (HOA-100) on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Warm Springs, manuscript "Collect 25¢" and 1856 docketing below, Very Fine and choice, an attractive example of this scarce handstamp, only seven known in red.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Holland, Morley & Co.'s Express, black ribbon frank on 1861, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, indicia canceled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Marysville, Sep 12" oval date stamp; backflap and small tear at top repaired, otherwise Very Fine, only six usages of this ribbon frank are known.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Hunter & Co.'s Express, oval horse and rider handstamp on incoming folded letter to Sacramento, manuscript "Oneida, Mich, Oct 18th" origin postmark and "26cts" rating, "New York, 10, Oct 25" integral rate cds, handed over to Hunter in Sacramento with manuscript "1.35" express fee and "McDowelville" destination endorsement, Very Fine, an excellent strike of this intricate early express marking.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

McDowelville (Sacramento County) was located three miles above Mormon Island, on the south fork of the American River.

(Hunter & Co.'s Express), 1852 incoming folded letter to Sacramento City, franked with 1851, 3¢ dull red, pair tied by "Farmington, Me., Sep 7" origin cds, manuscript "Received at Taylor's Ravine by express, Oct 27th/52", no express marking but carried by Hunter's (see lot 224 in our sale 37, cover from the same correspondence); stamps faulty, Fine.
