Lot 936    

Arizona & New Mexico Express Co. (Prescott) (Yavapai), black company frank on 1873, 3¢ green entire to San Francisco, Cal., with blue "A. & N. M. Ex. Co., Prescott, A.T., Apr 27" oval date stamp (Meyer 12, rarity 12), Very Fine, one of the finer examples of this scarce express.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

This express was launched by Henry Wells in 1874, providing stagecoach service to and from points in Arizona and the eastern terminus of the Southern Pacific Railroad. By 1876 the express folded, having lost its usefulness as the railroad pushed further east.

Lot 937    

Pedro Aguirre & Co., black company frank on unused 1884, 2¢ brown on amber entire, Very Fine, this is believed to be the only known mint example of this frank.
Scott No. U278    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

In 1873 gold was discovered south of Arivaca near the Mexican border which led to a Gold Rush in that area. This led Pedro Aguirre in 1877 to start a route from Tucson to Arivaca and then south to the Oro Blanco mining camp. This continued until he sold the company in 1886 and retired.

Lot 938    

Tombstone & Patagonia Express Line, illustrated four-horse stagecoach frank, on unused 1874, 3¢ green entire, Very Fine, the Only Known Example of This Express Frank, ex Barkhausen.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

A partnership between John Delamore Kinnear and H.C. Walker had resulted in a stage company which ran between Tucson and Tombstone, Arizona Territory. This affair ended around 1881 and each partner formed his own stage line that ran over the same route. It is believed that John Kinnear formed the Tombstone & Patagonia stage line when the partnership with Walker ended. In early 1883, Kinnear sold his stage lines to Robert Crouch & Company.

Wells Fargo & Co. Express, Benson, A.T., Aug 1, 1892 (Cochise), purple oval date stamp (Meyer 4, rarity 8) with additional straight line date stamp on part pin-up (paste-up) 1887, 2¢ green entire to San Francisco, Cal., receiving date stamp, Very Fine, this is one of only three recorded examples of this Benson date stamp.

Wells Fargo & Co. Express, Dos Cabezas, A.T. (Cochise), clear folded letter oval handstamp (Meyer 2, rarity 6) on 1874, 3¢ green entire to Silver City, N.M., with original 1881 enclosure regarding purchasing a mine; cover reduced at left with restored nick and upper left corner, still Very Fine and choice strike, this is one of three recorded examples from Dos Cabezas, believed to be the only handstamp having the "Express" in the cancel.
