(Naval) 1861 (Mar. 28) U.S.S. Mohican, Fernando Po (Equatorial Guinea) To Brunswick Me., orange buff cover with blurry "Fernando Po, MR 28 61" British post office origin cds, Liverpool "Br. Packet" (5.11) transit backstamp and "26" cent debit rating, carried by Cunard Line Persia, "New-York Br. Pkt. May 22" cds with "31" cent due rating, this was an error rate by the British post (26¢ debit should have been 28¢), accompanied by second cover from same correspondence with clear "Fernando Po, MR 16 60" cds, Liverpool (5.12) transit backstamp and correct ms. "28" cent debit, "New-York Br. Pkt. May 23" with "33" due rating h.s., cover missing paper at right, also includes third cover bearing two 1857, 3¢ dull red singles addressed to Janus Atkins, U.S. Steamer Mohican at New York N.Y., Very Fine.

Rhode Island, West India Squadron, group of 12 covers to Boston with original letters from the West Indies comprising datelines of At Sea, Cape Haytien, "Between Cuba & Haiti", various rate markings including "U.S. Ship 3 cts.", "Steamship 20", Boston "Ship 4", Philadelphia "Due 6", "New York Ship Letter '6' " integral due cds, Port Royal "6" due rating, New York with manuscript. "Due 6" rating, generally lengthy letters; some flaws, F.-V.F.

Shenandoah at Bahia, Brazil, cds on cover bearing 10¢ green (68) and 12¢ black (69), pair and single, small faults incl. one with s.e. at right, all tied by matching cork cancels for the 45¢ treaty rate by British Mails, red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid Feb 21" exchange cds and matching "40" cent credit rating handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Australasian from New York to Queenstown arriving Mar. 3rd, red London Paid (3.5.66) transit; reduced at left with small tear, Fine and rare use, ex-Milgram.

Franklin, Sheerness, England to Gideon Welles, Sec. of Navy, Washington D.C., cover with "U.S. Flag Ship Franklin, European Squadron" printed corner card, bearing G.B. 1s green tied by "699" grid of Sheerness, red London (10.15) backstamp with "21/Cents" credit handstamp, probably carried by Inman Line City of Paris from Liverpool to New York, red "N. York, Am. Pkt. Paid Oct 29" exchange cds; opened out for display and repaired at upper left, Very Fine appearance.
Scott No. GB #48    Estimate $150 - 200.

The U.S.S. "Franklin" was on her maiden cruise touring Europe while this letter was sent. She was the Flagship of the European Squadron under Admiral David G. Farragut and this cover was probably sent by him to Gideon Welles.

(Naval) 1868 (Aug. 6) "U.S. Flagship Powhatan, South Pacific" to Fort Hamilton, N.Y. via Panama, cover with ship letter endorsement probably sent from Peru, three-line "Panama, 21 Aug 1868, Transit" handstamp, entered mails with "New York, '34 U.S. Notes' Sep 5" depreciated currency cds overstriking blue crayon "24" cent due rating; flap missing, upper right corner mend, F.-V.F.

(Naval) 1869 (Oct. 24) U.S.S. Delaware, Yokohama, Japan to Waynesville Oh., cover docketed "U.S. Asiatic Squadron, Flagship Delaware, Naval Letter" and "Per P.M.S.S. 'Japan' ", entered mails with "China and Japan, Steam Service" oval handstamp, carried as endorsed by PMSS Japan from Yokohama departing Nov. 2nd to San Francisco arriving Nov. 22nd, "San Francisco Cal. Nov 23" cds and blue crayon "20" cent due rating for two-times the 10¢ steamship rate, original enclosure with printed letterhead "U.S. Flag Ship 'Delaware', Asiatic Squadron"; cover soiling and small tears, Fine.

Long letter from warrant officer John V. Falkinburg that has some interesting content that reviews the activities of the U.S.S. Delaware, trip ashore at Yedo, a visit by a British Frigate commanded by the Duke of Endinburgh (2nd Son of Queen Victoria), and witnessing a Japanese execution of three men by beheading in Yokohama that was an apparently routine event "done in less than the time I have taken to write it" and caused the writer to feel sick. The U.S.S. Delaware of 2,400 tons with 20 heavy guns that was originally named U.S.S. Pisquataqua.

Lancaster, Bahia, Brazil to Pottsville, Pa., blue "U.S. Flag-Ship Lancaster" oval rope ship cachet cover opened out for display, bearing 1869, 10¢ yellow tied by "N.York Steamship Feb 20" cds, carried by USBMC North America that departed Rio de Janeiro Jan. 26th to New York arriving Feb. 20th, original letter datelined " 'Lancaster', At Sea, Jan 17 /71" and " 'Lancaster', At Bahia, Jan 22 /71"; cover faulty, Fine.

(Naval) 1871 (Mar. 20, May. 4) U.S.S. Plymouth, France to Philadelphia Pa., two covers with original letters datelined "U.S.S. Plymouth" and bearing France 1870, 30c, 40c Bordeaux issues prepaying the fully prepaid 70c per 10 gram rate, first tied by "532" diamonds and Bordeaux (3.20) cds, red London (3.22) transit with "2 Cents" credit h.s., top edge flaws; second cancelled by "11" diamonds and with Brest (5.4) cds, red London (5.8) transit with "2" credit h.s., letters from Lt. Cdr Bartlett J. Cromwell, Executive Officer of the Ship to his wife; some stamp flaws, F.-V.F., a scarce pair.
