(Naval) U.S. Navy - Balance, group of over 50 covers mostly sent to or from ships while in U.S. ports, including 1851 to the USS Albany at Charleston S.C. and forwarded to Pensacola, 1800 USS Essex guard mail letter signed by Capt. Edward Preble to Commander of the USS Congress, 1848 USS Portsmouth at sea near Madeira Islands to Athens Ga., 1825 USS Cyane at New York to Huntingdon Pa., 1836 USS Porpoise at Charleston to Boston, 1826 USS Warren at Charlestown Mass. to Fallsburgh N.Y., 1852 USS Constitution from Brooklyn to Palmens Springs Va. about to sale for the Mediterranean, 1852 USS North Carolina receiving ship at New York to local N.Y.C. address, 1845 USS Congress at Baltimore being towed out and entered mails with Baltimore cds and "Steam" rating, 1860s USS Wyoming with #35 used from Vallejo Cal. to Georgetown D.C., etc., some faults, F.-V.F.

(Naval) Navy Mail - 1860s with Civil War Related, group of 70 covers comprising mail to or from various naval ships operating during the Civil War and shortly afterwards, plus a few Naval related like a "Our Army and Navy Forever" patriotic, better includes two Philadelphia "U.S. Ship 3 cts." circular h.s. usages, U.S.S. Colorado patriotic to Stoneham Mass. with blue "Due 3", Eagle and Shield patriotic with "U.S. Ship 3 cts" oval, 1864 used from U.S. Store Ship Relief to Milo Me. via Providence with "Ship 8" rating, U.S.S. Bainridge at Aspinwall Sep. 14th 1861 to Newton Mass. via North Star with "Steam Ship" and "40" rating handstamps; some mixed condition, F.-V.F.

(Naval) U.S.S. Texas Postal History Collection, 1914-2004, extensive holding of approximately 1,000 covers and cards mostly housed in a dozen cover albums; showing the array of postal markings and usages throughout starting with early cover and letter datelined "Off Anton Lizardo, Mexico, October 8, 1914", 1915-16 usages off the east coast and West Indies, later with the showing of censor markings at the start of WWI, 1918 European war tour and post armistice covers and cards, good showing of 1920's cover during the Pacific tour, strong showing of 1930's commemorative cachet covers including Navy Day, Armistice Day, Presidents Day, etc., Texas Centennial stamp issue commemoration, many Crosby cachets, with a myriad of location postmarks, nice assembly of WWII cover including 1942-43 Free usages, also includes a section of penalty with an extensive array of corner card and penalty imprints, also a 1931-37 correspondence; a wonder assembly of U.S.S. Texas covers which would be nearly impossible to duplicate, F.-V.F. overall.

(Naval) U.S.S. Texas Naval Correspondence, 1917-19, of 33 covers mostly from Percy Clark aboard the U.S.S. Texas during WWI to his mother and father; each with original enclosure detailing his experience during and shortly after WWI, with interesting content including first letter…The Pres. declared war at 1:00 o'clock Thursday. They have seized the German boats in the harbors and I heard they sank one ship, many of the covers prior to going to Europe are patriotic covers and showing the domestic rate change from 2¢ to the 3¢ war rate, other covers including YMCA, covers during tour in Europe with censor date stamp, mentions the activities of pressing back the Germans during the war, post war correspondence (many from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) with mention of the first aeroplane flying from a American battleship and the successful attempt by Navy Curtiss NC flying boat NC-4 to become the first airplane to cross the Atlantic; cover condition a bit mixed, F.-V.F. overall.

(Naval) U.S.S. Texas Naval Correspondence, 1944-45, of approximately 300 covers most from Anthony Mayer aboard the U.S.S. Texas during WWII, good showing of U.S. Naval postmarks and censor markings including "Free" mail during Nov-Dec of 1944, V-Mail and a few ephemera items, covers mostly without contents (with letter donation forms) but includes a couple enclosures written after D-Day with interesting content including crossing the English Channel, shooting at enemy's vital targets, At one time, we had 27 enemy prisoners on boardThey didn't look like supermen to me., being bombed by enemy planes and glider bombs, etc.; an interesting and historical wartime correspondence.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

During WWII, the Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic, and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Jones ALS, 1817 B.W. Crowninshield ALS, 1820 Smith Thompson, 1822 John .C. Calhoun, 1825 c. and 1829 Samuel Southard, 1830 John Branch, 1832 c. Levi Woodbury, 1829 Mahlon Dickerson, 1839 James K. Stevens use to USS Olympia at Ceylon, 1885 two covers from USS Lancaster at Dakar bearing France 25c. yellow, 1887 USS Brooklyn at Ceylon with Ceylon 28c. to Philadelphia, etc.; some mixed condition, F.-V.F.

(Naval) U.S. Navy - African Squadron, group of six comprising two 1860-61 covers from USS Sumter off the Coast of Africa on anti-slavery patrol, 1860-61 cover from New Sharon Me. to USS Mohican, African Squadron, 1845-51 c. from USS Marion that was on the West Coast of Africa or the Mediterranean; 1850 letter from USS John Adams off the coast of Africa near St. Paul de Loando to Boston Mass. via Salem, and 1848 letter from USS Brig Perry off the coast of Natal, Brazil which was on anti-slavery patrol between Africa and Brazil, F.-V.F., interesting group.

(Naval) U.S. Navy - Far East, group of nine items comprising 1867 Windorn N.Y. cover bearing #65 (2) and #68 (4) prepaying the 45¢ rate to USS Shenandoah at Hong Kong, two 1864 Meadville Pa. covers bearing #68 to USS Jamestown at Hong Kong, 1867 Oct 24th circa cover front from USS Shenandoah probably at Hong Kong bearing #68 and red "China and Japan Steam Service" with preprinted address to Tioga Pa. (this was this first trip that the China Japan oval was used); 1868 cover with red "China and Japan Steam Service" oval h.s. but missing stamp;1870 Hong Kong cover paid all to Waynesville Oh. bearing two HK 8¢ stamps (replacements), 1868 cover with Hong Kong 8th May 1862 letter to San Francisco with "Ship 5" rating h.s., 1836 USS Peacock at Batavia Roads to New York City, and 1832 cover from 4th Auditor that originally forwarded a Linton (Canton) China letter; mixed condition, Fine.
