1849 Incoming to San Francisco, CA, cover with manuscript "Exeter N.Y., March 31" postmark and incorrect "10" cent due rate for over 300 miles, corrected with magenta manuscript "40" upon arrival at San Francisco, addressed to Augustine Hale of the New England Mining Co. at San Francisco, Upper California, "Fortune Favors the Bold" sealing label on reverse, Very Fine and scarce 1849 inbound use; signed by Frajola on reverse.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This was carried on the maiden inbound voyage of PMSS "Panama" arriving June 4, 1849.

1850 (Sep. 25) Valparaiso, Chile to San Francisco Cal., blue datelined folded letter with blue "VAPOR BOLIVIA/P" two-line handstamp with name of PSNC steamer Bolivia that departed Sept. 26th to Panama arriving Oct. 19th, then by PMSS California Nov. 1st to San Francisco arriving Nov. 22nd, San Francisco red "30" framed due handstamp applied on arrival, reverse with sender's "E. & T. Serruys & Ca. Valparaiso" sender's double-line oval; small bleached spot, F.-V.F., a scarce name-of-ship marking.

1851 (Mar. 26) Valparaiso, Chile to San Francisco Cal., datelined blue folded letter with two strikes of "VAPOR N. GRANADA" of straightline handstamp with name of PSNC steamer New Granada from Valparaiso to Panama, then by PMSC Tennessee from Panama May 1st to San Francisco arriving May 20th, San Francisco red "30" framed due handstamp applied on arrival, Very Fine, a scarce name-of-ship marking.

1852 (Jun. 24) La Barthe de Neste, France to San Jose Cal., folded letter with "La Barthe de Neste, 24 Juin 52" cds and red boxed "P.P." framed handstamp with manuscript "15" decimes rating on reverse, Paris (6.27) transit backstamp and boxed "PD" handstamp, via Great Britain with London red "Paid, 28 JU 28, 1852" transit cds, by RMSP service to Chagres and then PMSS to San Francisco where black "Paid" handstamp struck, Very Fine, a scarce use via RMSP via Chagres, ex-Walske.

1852 (May 7) Binche, Belgium to Nevada City, Cal., small cover with red "Binche, 7 Mai 1852" origin cds and matching boxed "PP" handstamp with prepaid manuscript "14" decimes rating on reverse, via Great Britain with red London "Paid, 10 MY 10, 1852" transit cds, carried by RMSP Magdelena from Southampton May 17th to St. Thomas, from St Thomas by RMSP Trent to Chagres, then by PMSS Oregon departing June 11 and arriving in San Francisco June 27, 1852; flap backed with paper in raised position, F.-V.F., an exceptional use via RMSP to Chagres, ex-Van der Linden and Walske.

1866 (Jul. 23) Barkhamsted, Conn. To San Francisco, Cal. Forwarded By Military Express To Fort Yuma, manuscript postmark "Barkhamsted Ct, July 23d / 66" ties 3¢ rose (65), light corner bend, on light buff cover addressed to "C.H. Case, Band, 14th Infty U.S.A., San Francisco, California", upon receipt re-directed to "Fort Yuma, Mil Ex" in manuscript using the red ink typical of the military at this time, it should be noted that the cover was not re-mailed through the post office (it does not bear a San Francisco postmark) and instead was transmitted using the military supply route between San Francisco and Fort Yuma, reverse with pencil "Rec at Fort Yuma, August 29th 1866", Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Fort Yuma is located in Imperial Valley, California, across the Colorado River from Yuma, Arizona operating 1851-83. After the Civil War the fort was a quartermaster depot to store and distribute supplies for all military posts in Arizona Territory, Nevada, Utah Territory, New Mexico Territory and Texas during the Indian Wars period (1866-78). When this cover was mailed, detachments of the U.S. Army 14th Infantry Regiment fought in the Snake War against the Native Americans in Arizona Territory from 1866-68. Charles H. Case died in 1867.
