Alviso, Cal., July 18/62 (Santa Clara), bold manuscript postmark (SCL-160) on cover to Cortland, N.Y., franked with pen cancelled 1861, 10¢ green (natural s.e.), with original enclosure; trivial edge wear, otherwise Very Fine.

Lot 618    

Big Pine, June 12th, 1874 (Inyo), manuscript postmark (INY-140) only used during the first period of this Post Office (April 20, 1871 - October 20 1874), on cover to Merced, Cal., franked with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote; cover reduction at right, Very Fine, only a few examples are known.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 619    

Bishop, Calif., April 17, 1890 (Inyo), magenta cds and target duplex (INY-0240) tying 1890, 2¢ lake on cover to Oasis, which is located in the southwest corner of Mono County on the Nevada border; cover slightly reduced at right, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Post Office moved from the location at Bishop Creek to the town of Bishop in 1888. This three (3) ring circular mark was the first postal mark used at the new location. This mark is recorded in magenta/violet between 1888 and 1890 and in dark blue in 1891.

Bodie, Calif, July 22, 1932 (Mono), manuscript postmark (MON-0330) on cover franked with target canceled 3¢ L.A. Olympics issue, Very Fine, from late June to early August, 1932 the Post Office used a manuscript mark because most of the town was destroyed by fire including the Post Office.

Bondville, Cal., Sep 28 (Mariposa), cds (MAR-0360) on cover South Ryegate, Vt., franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 10¢ green, type II, horizontal pair, cover double rate due to the enclosure of a $5 gold piece with coin indentation is still visible in the lower right of the envelope, Very Fine, rare usage of an envelope to carry a keepsake coin of the gold rush.

Bridgeport, Cal, April 7/70 (Mono), manuscript postmark (MON-0340) on cover to Stockton, Cal., franked with 1869, 3¢ ultramarine tied by manuscript, "April 13" handstamp applied at Stockton; light cover soiling, otherwise Very Fine.

Calexico, Cal., Military Sta., Oct 13, 1916 (Imperial), duplex postmark (IMP-380) tying 2¢ carmine (s.e. at right and bottom) on cover to Vancouver Barracks, Washington, carried out of Mexico by military express to the special established Post Office at Calexico, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Military Station was established to handle the mail that was passed to and from Black Jack Pershing "Army" that had invaded Mexico (March 14, 1916 to February 7, 1917) to chase down and kill Pancho Villa after he crossed into the US and attacked Columbia, NM. Only mail coming out of Mexico will have the Calexico postal mark. Only a few examples known with this being the only example directed to the west coast.

Esmeralda, Cal, Nov 25 (Mono), manuscript postmark (MON-650) on cover to Troy, N.Y. franked with 1861, 10¢ green tied by grid and manuscript "Paid" most likely indicating that cover was express carried at some point, cover could not be carried north due to weather late in the season and was carried over the southern pass to Stockton where it received a Dec 9th mark, Very Fine.

Esmeralda, Cal., Mch 11, 63 (Mono), manuscript postmark (MON-650) tying 1861, 10¢ green on cover to Illinois; stamp with tear at bottom and cover reduced at left, otherwise Very Fine, manuscript postal marks are recorded from this ghost town between March, 1862 and May 1863, in January 1864 a boundary survey placed the town in Nevada.

Galt, Cal, Aug 16 (Sacramento), blue cds (SAC-1330) with matching fancy "OK RAY" postmark on reverse of 1883 registered package to Drytown, Cal., "Maiden, Montana, Aug 6, 1883" origin cds's on front and various other transit postmarks on reverse including Ogden City, Utah oval, Very Fine, a very rare California fancy postmark.
