Pkt, 30 or U.S. 41 Notes, 16 Jul" depreciated currency cds, pencil "Due 41" at bottom left, original letter accompanies; reduced slightly at right and open at top, Very Fine.

'21' Aug 9" exchange cds, probably carried by Hapag Line Cimbria from New York Aug. 10th to Southampton arriving Aug. 20th, London (8.21) backstamp and manuscript "1/-" due rating for 1s packet rating, Penrith (8.22, 8.23) cds, red manuscript "Refused" and notation on reverse "Not for Lord Brougham, Penrith" along with "Returned, London" (8.24) backstamp, "B" of Brougham underlined and red ms. "B" at top right for filing perhaps done by the Dead Letter Office, Very Fine and attractive use.

'3 Paid' Nov 14" exchange cds on cover bearing 24¢ lilac (78) tied by small grid cancel, carried on Allan Line Peruvian from Quebec Nov. 16th to Londonderry arriving Nov. 25th, red London Paid (11.27) arrival cds, F.-V.F., a scarce Detroit exchange office use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Allan line sailed from Quebec or Portland to Liverpool via Londonderry. Portland, Chicago or Detroit were designated as the United States exchange office.

1868 (Mar. 11) New York N.Y. to Liverpool, England, folded letter from the Rathbone correspondence bearing 24¢ lilac (78) tied by vivid red quartered cork cancel and partial "Supplementary Mail" framed handstamp, matching partial red "New York Paid All Mar 11" exchange cds, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Australasian from New York Mar. 11th to Liverpool Mar. 21st, Liverpool (3.21) arrival backstamp, fresh and Very Fine; with 1983 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A SCARCE NEW YORK SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL TYPE A USE TO ENGLAND.

Cover was prepaid 24¢ for the 12¢ treaty rate plus 12¢ supplementary mail fee. This was unusual for the Rathbone correspondence as many had the supplementary mail fee paid in cash.
