(San Francisco) San Francisco, 1 Feb., orange cds with matching straight line "Paid" and rare "59" rating handstamp on 1851 blue folded letter to England, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Mar. 12 to Liverpool arriving Mar. 23, markings include Boston red "19" credit handstamp, red Liverpool America (3.23) and London (3.24) arrivals, Very Fine, a scarce example of the 59¢ ratemarker for 40¢ West Coast rate via Panama plus 19¢ Transatlantic.

(San Francisco) San Francisco, Cal., Mar 1, bold sharp strike of cds (SAF-360) on 1853 prices current to Deventer, Holland, with matching "Paid" and "26" rate handstamps, red "New York, Am. Packet, Apr 2" exchange cds, London transit backstamp with U.S. Pkt. handstamp and "8" pence debit to Holland, Deventer arrival backstamp and manuscript "70" Dutch Cents due rating, Very Fine and choice, a scarce early usage to Holland.

(San Francisco) R. E. Raimond, General Shipping., and, Commission Merchant, 77 Davis St San Francisco, blue double oval handstamp on buff cover addressed to Oasis Rancho, San Jose Road, with uncancelled 1851 3¢ dull red (slightly cut in) at right, Very Fine, the Raimond oval is seen on other covers but this is the only known "77 Davis" address examples, it is our belief that this is the only example of an express usage, where Raimond transmitted the cover with the uncancelled 3¢ adhesive as per Post Office regulations, ex-Clifford.

(San Francisco) San Francisco, July 10th 1855, dateline on folded letter to Table Bluff, Humboldt Bay, with manuscript ship endorsement "Favored by Capt. Woodley Brig Wyandot" at top, minor edge toning, otherwise Very Fine, a rare early coastal steamship usage carried outside the mails.

(San Francisco) San Francisco, Cal., 5 Dec., cds tying 1855, 10¢ green, type III (straddle copy with sheet dividing line at right, large margins, cut in at bottom) on brown cover to Newburyport, Mass, with manuscript notation at lower left per "Str Golden Age" which carried it to Panama then overland to the Atlantic side where another steamship took it to New York, minor edge wear, Very Fine.

(San Francisco) San Francisco Cal. 20 Jun, cds ties 10¢ green (15) on blue folded letter datelined "San Fco June 19/1856" to Philadelphia Pa., letter with excellent content concerning the 1856 vigilance committee, "…our city is in an unsettled condition & the Governor has declared us in a state of insurrection & is enlisting troop to put down the vigilance collection of mostly minte but does not make much head way his cause Law & Order or Murder as it is called not being very popular he having up to the present only 500 men whilst the V. C. have over 6,000 men. I do not apprehend a collision although some do but it would be madness to attack the V.C. you well get full accounts from the papers of such damages shocking bad for business…"; file fold creases 10¢, some light toning, Fine and rare vigilance committee letter.

The San Francisco Committee of Vigilance was a popular ad hoc organization formed in 1851 and revived on May 14, 1856 in response to rampant crime and corruption in the municipal government of San Francisco, California.
