1860 (Jun. 30) New York N.Y. to Sydney, New South Wales, cover in care of U.S. Consul bearing 3¢ dull red (26) and 10¢ green, type V (35) strip of three, nat. s.e. at left, all tied by red NYFM circular grid cancels, red "New-York Am. Pkt. Jun 30" exchange backstamp and magenta "12" credit rating, carried by Vanderbilt Line Illinois from New York Jun. 30th to Southampton arriving Jul. 13th, red London Paid (7.14) transit cds, "Ship Letter, Sydney, SP13 1860" rimless arrival backstamp; some 10¢ strip affected by edge placement including right stamp faulty, still Very Fine appearing, a scarce 1857 issue use to New South Wales.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Prepaid for the 33¢ British Mail rate via Southampton effective January 1, 1857 to December 31, 1867. The 12¢ credit to Great Britain was for 12¢ British transit, the U.S. retained 21¢ for 5¢ U.S. postage plus 16¢ transatlantic packet.

1862 (Jul. 8) New London Conn. to Braidwood, New South Wales, cover bearing two 3¢ rose (65) singles and 30¢ orange (71) pair, cancelled together by circular grid cancels, red "Boston Br. Pkt. 'Paid' Jul 9" exchange backstamp with red crayon "56" cent credit rating, carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Boston Jul. 9th to Queenstown arriving Jul. 18th, red London Paid (7.21) transit cds, Braidwood (9.12) arrival backstamp, partial flap; stamps faulty and cover repaired, Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Prepaid at two-times the 33¢ British Mail rate via Southampton effective January 1, 1857 to December 31, 1867. The 56¢ credit to Great Britain was for 24¢ British transit and 32¢ transatlantic packet, the U.S. retained 10¢ for two-times 5¢ U.S. postage.

Pkt. Nov 13" exchange cds and matching "37" due rating handstamp; small edge and flap tear, F.-V.F.

1853 (Aug. 19) Melbourne, Victoria to Nassau N.Y., buff cover bearing Victoria 1852, 3d blue, Ham printing, 3rd Die State (S.G. 11, Scott 3 var.), margins to slightly in, tied by two strikes of "1" Barred Oval of Melbourne, endorsed "S.S. Argo via Southampton" at top, manuscript "8" pence due rating and corresponding manuscript "16" cents debit to U.S., red London (10.30) transit backstamp, carried on Collins Line Baltic from Liverpool Nov. 2nd to New York arriving Nov. 14th, bold "New.York Am. Packet. Nov 14" exchange cds with matching "37" cents due rating handstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 37¢ PRIVATE SHIP MAIL RATE FROM VICTORIA.

The cover was sent at the 37¢ private ship rate from the United Kingdom that was effective July 1, 1849 to November 30, 1855. The rate was composed of 16¢ British transit (8d), 16¢ transatlantic packet and 5¢ U.S. postage. The cover was prepaid only the Victoria domestic postage of 3 pence.

1855, 1861 Victoria, Australia to the United States, two covers, 1855 bearing Victoria 1s blue (18), faults, tied by "1" barred oval cancel on cover to New York at the double 45¢ rate partially paid, Melbourne (8.29) backstamp, red Liverpool Paid (11.27) tombstone transit, Liverpool (11.28) backstamp and "6/Cents" debit rating handstamp, carried by Collins Line Baltic to New York where "48" due rating handstamp struck; 1861 cover bearing Victoria 4d rose (59) pair and 1s blue (25) tied by grid cancels to Lynchburg Va., red Melbourne (3.25.61) backstamp, endorsed "Via Marseilles", British "16/Cents" credit handstamp for transatlantic packet, carried by NGL Line New York, "N.York Am. Pkt. '5' May 28" exchange due cds; small stamp and cover faults, Fine, a scarce pair of covers.

The 45¢ British mail rate via England was available only from July 1855 until December 1855. The 45¢ British mail rate via Marseilles was effective January 1, 1857 until December 31, 1867.

Jan 9" exchange backstamp and red crayon "28" cent credit rating, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Jan. 9th to Queenstown arriving Jan. 20th, red London (1.22) transit cds, Melbourne (4.15) arrival backstamp; cover edge mends, reduced slightly at left, Fine, Prepaid for the 33¢ British Mail rate via Southampton.

Pkt. Paid Jan 18" exchange backstamp with red crayon "12" cent credit rating, carried by Inman Line Kangaroo from New York Jan. 18th to Liverpool Feb. 2nd, red London (2.3) transit cds, red Melbourne (4.17) arrival backstamp, manuscript "2" rating; stamp faults, cover reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F.

Prepaid for the 39¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles effective January 1, 1857 to December 31, 1867. The 12¢ credit to Great Britain was incorrect and should have been 18¢ for 12¢ British transit and 6¢ French transit. The U.S. should have retained only 21¢ for 5¢ U.S. postage plus 16¢ transatlantic packet.

Cover prepaid at the 45¢ British mail rate for ¼ to ½ oz. via Marseilles that was effective January 1, 1857 to December 31, 1867. The 24¢ credit to G.B. was 12¢ French transit and 12¢ British transit, the U.S. retained 21¢ for 5¢ U.S. postage plus 16¢ transatlantic packet.
