Dec 7" exchange backstamp and red "19" credit handstamp on face, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Dec. 7th to Liverpool arriving Dec. 20th, red Liverpool America Paid (12.19) transit and red London (12.19) backstamp, F.-V.F.

1856 (Jan. 3) New Orleans La. to Liverpool, England, blue printed prices current bearing 1¢ blue (9) and 3¢ dull red (11A), margins to cut in, tied over blue crayon "4" by "New Orleans La Jan 3" cds, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Jan. 16th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 27th, Liverpool America (1.27) backstamp and matching bold "2" rating handstamp; minor spindle hole, Very Fine and rare 1851 issue prepaid double circular.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This cover is prepaid at two-times the 2¢ circular rate to Great Britain with 2 pence due for inland postage. Ashbrook's notation "Two Circulars, Two Rates, 4¢ Rate".

1858 (Dec. 6) Oconomowoc Wis. to Worcester, England, large-size gray cover bearing 12¢ black (36) block of four and pair, tied by strikes of "Oconomowoc Wis. Dec 6" cds, "New York Am. Packet Dec 11" exchange cds and matching "Short Paid" framed handstamp with blue crayon "96" due rating, carried by Havre Line Arago from New York Dec. 11th to Southampton arriving Dec. 23rd, red London (12.23) transit backstamp and manuscript "4/-" shilling quadruple packet rating, Worcester (12.24.58) arrival backstamp; one stamp in block lightly creased and left stamp in pair faulty, Fine, An extremely rare use of a 12¢ 1857 Issue block of four; with 1954 Ashbrook photo certificate with notes.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The 72¢ in postage was an attempt to prepay triple the 24¢ rate but the U.S.-British treaty required four-times for letters weighing over 1½ ounces. It is therefore rated short paid and due 96¢ without any credit for prepayment.
