1856 (Jun. 14) San Francisco Cal. to Sneek, Holland, blue folded cover with blue Netherlands Consular handstamp corner card, black "San Francisco Cal. 5 May" cds and red "Paid" handstamp with magenta "26" cent rating, red "New-York Am. Pkt. May 31" exchange cds, carried on Havre Line Fulton from New York May 31st to Southampton arriving Jun. 14th, black "U.S. Pkt." straightline, red London (6.14.61) transit backstamp and manuscript "4" pence due rating, Sneek (6.14) arrival backstamp and "400" Dutch cents due rating, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This is the only recorded example of the 26¢ West Coast rate by American packet via British Open mails to Holland.

1857 (Dec. 12) New Orleans La. to Amsterdam, Holland, blue folded letter bearing 5¢ red brown (12), close margins to slightly in, tied by "New Orleans La. Dec 12" cds, red "New-York Br. Pkt. Dec 23" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Europa from New York Dec. 23rd to Liverpool arriving Jan. 4th, red London (1.4) transit backstamp with manuscript "1/" shilling debit rating, red Amsterdam (1.6) arrival backstamp with manuscript "80" Dutch cents due rating, red crayon "210" on reverse; partial of address inked out, Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED 5¢ 1856 ISSUE COVER TO THE NETHERLANDS.

As an indication of rarity, this destination was missing from the massive 5¢ 1856 collection formed and exhibited by Frederick R. Mayer. The other recorded cover is:

1859 (Jan. 25) Galveston Tex. to Hague, Netherlands, 3¢ red on buff entire (U10) bearing three 3¢ dull red, type IV (26A) singles and three 10¢ green (32) singles, all tied by strikes of partial "Galveston Tex. Jan 25 1859" cds, red "New York 'Paid 18' Feb 5" exchange credit cds, carried by French line chartered Etna from New York Feb. 5th to Havre arriving Feb. 19th, red Havre (2.19) arrival datestamp and matching small "PD" framed handstamp; address crossed out in manuscript, F.-V.F. and scarce French mail use; with 1993 P.S.E. certificate.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Havre Line "Arago" was under repairs and as a result the New York mails of Feb. 5th were carried by "Etna", chartered from the Cunard Line. On 18 February she was reported as sailing from Southampton "for Havre" but no report has been found of her arrival there, this cover apparently proves she arrived on Feb. 19th. Cover was prepaid 42¢ for double the 21¢ French mail rate to the Netherlands effective April 1, 1857 to December 31, 1867.

York Br. Pkt. '5' Nov 6" exchange cds, manuscript "Received & forwarded Nov 7, S.J." forwarders endorsement on flap to Philadelphia with 3¢ dull red (26), rich color, tied by "New-York Nov 7" cds, Very Fine and scarce forwarded transatlantic use.

1861 (Jun. 5) New York N.Y. to Amsterdam, Holland, blue folded cover bearing 1¢ blue (24) and 10¢ green (35) pair tied by red NYFM circular grid cancels and "New-York Br. Pkt. Jun 5" exchange cds, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Persia from New York Jun. 5th to Queenstown arriving Jun. 15th, red London (6.17.61) transit backstamp and "1/" shilling debit rating, red Amsterdam (6.19) arrival cds and manuscript "80" Dutch cents due rating, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Even though this cover was prepaid 21¢ for American packet, it was actually sent by the 5¢ British open mail rate. The 21¢ postage was therefore a 16¢ overpayment and no credit was given for the overage.

Baltimore Md. to Amsterdam, Holland, blue folded cover (missing bottom flap) bearing 1¢ blue (63) pair tied by blue "Baltimore Md" double-circle postmark, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Jan. 8th to Queenstown Jan. 19th, red French (1.21.62) transit cds, manuscript Dutch "12½" cents due rating; some perfs trimmed at left, F.-V.F., prepaid at the 2¢ circular rate.

Oct 11" exchange cds, carried as endorsed on Inman Line City of Baltimore from New York Oct. 11th to Liverpool Oct. 23rd, red London (10.24) backstamp transit with manuscript "4" pence debit rating, partial Amsterdam receiver with manuscript "40" Dutch cents due rating; missing bottom flap, otherwise Very Fine.

Pkt. Jul 29" exchange backstamp and matching red "38" cent credit handstamp overstruck by red circular grid cancel and re-credited "23" cents in magenta manuscript, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Jul. 30th to Liverpool Aug. 11th, red Aachen Franco (8.12) framed transit and blue manuscript "6" sbr rating, Danish (8.13.56) and Hamburg (8.15) backstamps; block has framelines and margins skillfully added at bottom and upper left to improve its appearance, Very Fine appearing and extremely rare use, ex-Sevenoaks.

ONE OF ONLY SIX 12¢ 1851 BLOCKS USED ON FULL COVER, THIS BEING THE ONLY ONE USED TO NORWAY.

A REMARKABLE USE AT THE 37¢ PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL RATE TO RUSSIA.

The 37¢ per ½ ounce Prussian Closed Mail rate to Russia was effective Oct. 1, 1852 to Apr. 30th 1863.
