A REMARKABLE AND UNIQUE EXHIBIT COLLECTION OF THE E. LOUIS SMITH COUNTERFEITS.

This is a study of E. Louis Smith's postal card coating and printing business from 1895 until 1902, when he was sentenced to prison for two years for counterfeiting $100 of U.S. postal cards with 1894 and 1897 Jefferson designs. Postal Inspector W.E. Cochran discovered that Smith had been counterfeiting cards when he made a surprise visit. He had come to inspect the size of Smith's stock of unusable postal cards and already coated cards and to tell him that coated cards had been invalidated three weeks earlier. The Post Office Department had long redeemed unusable stamped envelopes and was going to being to redeem unusuable postal cards. The inspector noticed that Smith had blank card stock cut to size and a counterfeit plate mounted in his small press. Smith confessed to counterfeiting and was arrest on April 24th 1902.

Single examples of the UX14 counterfeit have hammered for between $375 and $750 in our past sales. The UX12 counterfeits have never been offered at public auction.
