(Town & County) Painesville, Nevada Co., March 24. 1868 (Nevada), manuscript postmark (NEV-1850) with pen canceled 1861,3¢ rose on cover to Maine, with "Via Steamer & Isthmus" endorsement; trivial edge faults at left, Very Fine and extremely rare, this being one of two known postmarks from this small town, both being manuscript.

Lot 377    

(Town & County) Panoche, Fresno Co., Cal., Isaak Myer, P.M., Sep 14, 1882 (Fresno), wonderful strike of purple oval date stamp (FRE-4360, R5) on 1874, 3¢ green entire to San Juan, with original enclosure regarding silver mining; cover roughly opened at right affecting indicia, an Extremely Fine strike, one of two recorded strikes of this unusual county & postmaster designation postmark (photo on web site).

Lot 378    

(Town & County) Penns, Sonoma Co. Cal., May 19, 1883 (Sonoma), clear sharp purple cds and target duplex (SON-3820, R5) on 1874, 3¢ green entire to San Francisco, with "Penns Grove, Cal." docketing at left, Very Fine and choice, the only recorded and exceptional example of Penngrove's first postmark.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

Established as Penn in October 30, 1882, the name shortly changed to Penn's Grove on August 3, 1883. This unique postmark falls between this short first period. The name was finally changed to Penngrove in 1894.

Lot 379    

(Town & County) Perris, San Diego Co., Cal., 7/1 (San Diego), purple straight line postmark (SAN-4300) on ca. 1886 cover to Madera, franked with manuscript canceled 1883, 2¢ red brown; cover slightly reduced at right and light stain at top affecting postmark, F.-V.F., this is the only recorded strike of Perris's first postmark.
Scott No. 210    Estimate $200 - 300.

Named for Fred T. Perris, chief engineer of the California Southern Railroad.

(Town & County) Petaluma, Sonoma Co. - Cal., Reg. B., Sep 1 - 1881 (Sonoma), boxed registry date stamp (SON-3930, R4) just barely tying 15¢ Banknote (189) on cover to Switzerland, reverse with New York transit and Swiss backstamps, Very Fine.

Lot 381    

(Town & County) Pinckney, Shasta Co., Cal., Dec 21, 1881 (Shasta), clear fancy serrated oval T&C date stamp (SHA-3410) on 1874, 3¢ green registered entire to Shasta, uprated with overlapping 1873-75, 2¢ vermilion + 6¢ dull pink and 10¢ brown, five singles all tied by target handstamps; few small stamp flaws, otherwise Very Fine, a choice strike and remarkable domestic franking, the earliest Pinckney postmark.

Lot 382    

(Town & County) Port Tiburon, Marin Co. Cal., Jul 22, 1887 (Marin), intensely bold cds and target duplex (MRN-3160, R5) on 1885, 2¢ Grant letter sheet to San Francisco; some light staining, a Superb strike, the only recorded example of the "Point Tiburon" postmark, ex-Polland.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

This was Tiburon's first handstamp postmark and the only one with the "Point" designation. It was an unofficial locative name used by the postmaster. No doubt the Post Office Department advised him that this was not allowed and by 1890, the device was still in use with "Point" removed.

(Town & County) Port Wine, Sierra Co. Cal., Feb 16, 1894 (Sierra), purple cds and target duplex (SIE-1280) canceling on 1887, 2¢ green entire to New York City, Very Fine, the earliest recorded example of this Port Wine postmark with usage recorded for less than a year (photo on web site).

Lot 384    

(Town & County) Quartsburg, Mariposa Co., Cal., Nov 26, 1851 (Mariposa), manuscript postmark (MAR-1970) on buff cover to Bangor, Me., additional "10" rating at right; light edge wear and small central erosion hole, still Very Fine, the earliest known postmark from Quartsburg.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Quartsburg post office officially opened on October 7, 1851 although it already was in operation during the middle of that year. This postmark from a little over a month after the official opening is the earliest by far, with Williams recording a February 1853 manuscript postmark as the earliest.

(Town & County) Reiff., Lake Co. Cal., Jun 11, 1883 (Lake), full clear cds (LAK-1590, R5) with matching target tying 3¢ Banknote on cover to Painted Post, N.Y., Extremely Fine, the only recorded example of Reiff's first postmark.
