(Los Angeles) Puente, Cal., two 1883, 2¢ red entires from correspondence to Santa Ana; one with manuscript "Puente, Nov 16, 84" postmark (LOS-12000, R5) and other with purple straight line "Puente, Cal" handstamp and manuscript "Nov 28/84" date (LOS-12010, R5); slight reductions, straight line with couple tiny edge nicks, still Very Fine, a remarkable pair of first type postmarks with both the only recorded examples.

(Los Angeles) San Gabriel, Cal., Feb 22nd, 68, manuscript postmark (Williams unlisted) on cover to Alpena, Mich. forwarded to Flint, franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 3¢ rose, Very Fine, one of two known manuscript "San Gabriel" postmark.
Scott No. 65    Estimate $150 - 200.

Williams records the earliest manuscript postmark as "Mission San Gabriel" in 1870 (LOS-12820).

(Los Angeles) Santa Ana, Cal, Aug. 27, manuscript postmark (Williams unlisted) on cover to San Juan, franked with manuscript canceled 1870, 3¢ Banknote, with original 1871 enclosure datelined San Joaquin Ranch and addresses ranch concerns including condition and number of the sheep on the ranch; cover reduced at left, Very Fine.
Scott No. 147    Estimate $400 - 600.

THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE EARLY SANTA ANA MANUSCRIPT POSTMARK.

The Santa Ana post office opened on July 5th of 1870. Cover addressed to Dr. Flint in Monterey County, the owner of the land grant that today makes up a large part of Southern Orange County.

Lot 151    

(Los Angeles) Tejon, Cal., Nov 20, 1857, manuscript postmark (LOS-14670, R7) on manuscript canceled 1855, 10¢ Nesbitt entire to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs J.W. Denver in Washington D.C., with original enclosure from James R. Vineyard datelined "Sebastian Sm'l Reverse, Tejon, Nov 17, 1857", Very Fine.
Estimate    $600 - 800.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF A TOWNMARK FROM TEJON, CALIFORNIA.

A post office was established at Tejon in July of 1857 at the site of the Sebastian (or Tejon) Indian Reservation (the first Indian reservation in California established in 1853) with Colonel James R. Vineyard as the resident agent at that time. The post office was moved six miles north in 1859 to Sinks.

(Los Angeles) University, Cal., Mar 13, 1883, neat manuscript postmark (LOS-15080) on cover to Flint, Mich., franked with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote, receiving backstamp, Very Fine, the earliest recorded University postmark, with known usage only between March & April of 1883 (photo on web site).

(Los Angeles) Wilmington, Cal., Sept 6 - 64, manuscript postmark (LOS-15800, R5) on cover to Portland, Me., franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 3¢ rose; sealed cover opening tear at upper right, otherwise Very Fine, the earliest and only recorded manuscript postmark used shortly before the arrival of the first type handstamp.
Scott No. 65    Estimate $200 - 300.

Wilmington, named for it's Delaware counterpart, was founded by Phineas Banning (known for his illustrated stagecoach handstamp) as a terminus for his freight and stage business.
