Mexico, 1868, Hidalgo (thin figures, perforated), 50c black on yellow, horizontal bisect, Zacatecas, bottom portion of stamp tied by neat sharp strike of Sierra Hermosa boxed handstamp (Schatzkes 1911) on fresh folded letter sheet to Santa Catarina, Extremely Fine and choice; with 2010 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.
Scott No. 55a    Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

THE FINEST OF ONLY TWO RECORDED ON COVER BISECT USAGES OF THE 1869 50C HIDALGO THIN FIGURE PERFORATED ISSUE.

Bisects are very unusual in the 1868 issue as they were deemed illegal during this period and should have no longer been tolerated by the postal authorities.

Mexico, 1868, Hidalgo (thick figures, imperf), 6c black on buff, cons 28-70, imperf, complete sheet of 100, full sheet margins, manuscript diagonal pen markings forming an "X" on each stamp as well as the manuscript. name "Lopez" across the sheet, 20 strikes of the Tonala Administration mark (Schatzkes 131) and 4 strikes of the two-line "Franco en Tonala" (Schatzkes #130) in the corners used as registration marks, minimal light file folds quarter the sheet, couple small internal holes, Very Fine appearance, one of the jewels of the 1868 issue, sold for $3,100 in 2010, ex-D. Stout.
Scott No. 58    Estimate $4,000 - 6,000.

Since 6c stamps were sent later in 1871 to this district, it is unlikely these markings were placed to demonetize the sheet.

Mexico, 1868, Hidalgo (thick figures, imperf), 6c black on buff, Jalapa, horizontal pair with 1868, Hidalgo (thick figures, imperf), 25c blue, Jalapa, all cons 14-71 on 1871 maritime cover to Burdeos, France, tied by oval Papantla handstamps (Schatzkes 626), travelled per "The City of Mexico" to New York and then by British open mail through England to France, with "New York, Br. Transit" cds and matching "5" in circle handstamp, G.B. accountancy handstamp and Calais transit, "24" decimes due handstamp applied upon arrival, Very Fine, a very rare transatlantic cover, ex-Rosenthal.
