1852 (Mar. 12) Ramsgate, England to Marietta Oh., envelope bearing G.B. 10d embossed (SG 57) cut-to-shape and three-margined 2d blue (SG 14), tied by "634" ovals prepaying the treaty rate, reverse with blue Ramsgate (3.12) origin and red London (3.13) transit cds, Liverpool (3.13) transit, red "Paid" and "5/Cents" credit handstamp to U.S., carried on Cunard Europa from Liverpool Mar. 13th to New York arriving Mar. 25th, Very Fine.

1852 (Apr. 4) New York N.Y. to Drogheda, Ireland, buff envelope containing bank draft which accompanies, showing black "New York '5' Apr 13" integral debit exchange cds to G.B., sent unpaid on Cunard Line Canada departing Boston Apr. 13th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 27th, Liverpool America (4.27) backstamp and "1/-" one-shilling due handstamp, red London (4.28) transit backstamp, Drogheda (4.28) arrival backstamp, the Drogheda post office marked "Unknown & Not Called For" along with its Drogheda (5.9) cds, the letter was returned to the U.S. and backstamped with Washington D.C. "Dead Letter Office" circular handstamp and manuscript "M, 1922, Aug 27 '52" filing, Fine.

1852 (Apr. 16) London, England to New York N.Y., missent to Montreal, light blue folded letter with red London Paid (4.16) Maltese cross datestamp and red manuscript "1/-" shilling rating, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Apr. 17th to Boston arriving Apr. 29th, flap with red "New-York May 1" cds, matching "Paid / Ship" two-line handstamp, arced "Paid" and "24" rating handstamp, flap with additional rare "MISSENT - TO" straightline and matching "Montreal L.C. MY 5 1852" cds, Very Fine and rare missent transatlantic use to Canada, ex-Hahn.

1852 (Jun. 8) Papeete, Tahiti to London via San Francisco Cal., folded letter with blue "San Francisco Cal 16 Sep" cds with matching "Paid" and "29" rate handstamp, New York red "3" credit handstamp to G.B., carried by Collins Line Atlantic from New York Oct. 16th to Liverpool arriving Oct. 27th, red London (10.28) arrival cds, Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE SAN FRANCISCO "29" IN BLUE, A REMARKABLE USAGE FROM TAHITI.

Letter sent privately to agent in San Francisco, where the 29¢ fee to England was paid. It was carried by Pacific Mail Steamship Co. steamer "Golden Gate" from San Francisco to Panama City and by U.S. Mail Steamship Co. steamer "Illinois" from Chagres to New York. Blue handstamp "29" applied at San Francisco when letter paid by agent. The blue color ink was used in San Francisco from September 1 to December 13, 1852 only.

1852 (Jul. 25) Rudolstadt, Germany to Reading Pa., cover with "Rudolstadt, 7 25" double-circle datestamp sent unpaid with red crayon "7" grote rating, Bremen (7.28) backstamp with matching large "7" grote debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Havre Line Franklin from Havre Aug. 4th to New York arriving Aug. 16th, partial strike of "New York '27' Aug 16" exchange debit cds, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Bremen struck the large stylized "7" handstamp to show debit in Bremen currency (grote) to the U.S. Postage due comprised 20¢ American postage (5¢ inland plus 15¢ sea postage) and 7¢ German transit postage.

1852 (Oct. 1) San Francisco Cal. to Bordeaux, France, blue folded letter with blue "San Francisco Cal. 1 Oct" cds and matching "Paid" and "26" rating handstamps, carried by Collins Line Baltic from New York Oct. 30th to Liverpool arriving Nov. 10th, red London (11.11) transit and red French (11.12) entry cds, French black "8" decimes due handstamp, reverse with Paris (11.12) and Bordeaux (11.13) arrival cds, Very Fine and earliest recorded strike of the rare blue "26" rating handstamp, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

One of only four recorded San Francisco blue "26" rating handstamp usages, blue was used only from Oct. 1st to Nov. 16th 1852. Letter was carried from San Francisco by PMSSC "Tennessee" to Panama City, then by USMSSC "Georgia" from Aspinwall to New York.

1852 (Oct. 15) Montevideo, Uruguay to Philadelphia Pa. via Chagres, Panama, folded letter endorsed "Via Rio" and carried privately to forwarder in Chagres where red on white illustrated December 5th 1852 "Express Messenger to New Orleans" express label applied endorsed Per Steamer Louisiana, out of mails via New Orleans to New York, bold strike of "New-York, Ship 7 cts, Dec 20" due cds for 5¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine and unrecorded by Rowe.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

There is no clear indication which forwarding agent applied this label. It is believed that either Gooding or Cowan, Chagres forwarding agents during this period are most likely.

1852 (Nov. 27) New York N.Y. to Duncaster, Scotland, money order envelope sent unpaid with black "NEW YORK '21' Nov 27" exchange office debit cds to G.B., carried on the Collins Line Pacific departing New York Nov. 28th to Liverpool arriving Dec. 11th, Liverpool America (12.11) backstamp and matching "1/-" due handstamp for an unpaid packet letter, red Edinburgh (12.12) backstamp and "Try Doncaster" marked, Doncaster (12.13) arrival backstamp and later marked "Not Called for", Doncaster (1.10) backstamp and returned to the U.S., Washington D.C. "P.O. Department, Dead Letter Office, Apr" oval handstamp with "192 - M, Apr. 7, 1853" dating; minor soiling, otherwise Very Fine and scarce transatlantic Dead Letter Office use.
