Confederacy, 1863, 2¢ brown red, vertical strip of four and a single, strip with margins nearly all around and nick at top left, single margins irregularly torn and into design, tied by three strikes of "Macon, Ga Oct 1" double-circle datestamp on brown cover to Hon. W.E. Smith, Albany Ga., a Very Fine and scarce use.

Confederacy, 1863, 2¢ brown red, large margins except touched at left, tied by tied neat "Richmond Va., Sep 13" cds on CSA War Department, Surgeon General's Office imprint semi-official (CSA Catalog WD-MD-04, CCV $2,500 for this stamp on a semi-official) addressed to Surgeon E. J. Gaillard, Richmond, Va.; at left charge "box 1150." notation, inside turned use bearing 10¢ blue (12) tied by "Richmond, Va Sep 23" cds to Capt. W. Aiken Kelly, Comdg Co. L, 1st S.C. Vols, Brig. Gen. McGowan's Brig, Lieut. Genl. Hill's Corps, A.N.V. (Army of Northern Virginia) near Petersburg, Va. with docketing at upper left showing receipt the following day; cover fully exploded to nicely show both sides; second side could be turned back to show both from same side but both are very nice uses on their own.

Capt. William Aiken Kelly was a corporal in the Carolina Light Infantry, 1st Regiment of Rifles, when the ordinance of secession was passed. With that company he took part in the capture of Castle Pinckney the first overt act of the war, December 27, 1860. He did military service in the harbor until after the capitulation of Fort Sumter. When a company was formed from the ranks of the Carolina Light Infantry, and other volunteers, for service in Virginia, he was chosen second sergeant. This command was known as the Carolina Light Infantry and joined Macey Gregg's 1st regiment of South Carolina Volunteers. Dr. Edwin Samuel Gaillard was engaged in the practice of medicine until the breaking out of the civil war, at which time he joined the Confederate Army and served until the war closed. At the close of the war Dr. Gaillard practiced his profession in Richmond for three years, afterward moving to Louisville, Ky. Confederacy, 1863, 2¢ pale red, large margins, tied by "Richmond Va. Mar. 17" cds (Powell type 6i) with matching "Paid 10" in circle rating handstamp on unsealed "Confederate States of America, Treasury Department" semi-official imprint cover (CSA type TD-02) to Charleston S.C., Very Fine, ex-Zimmerman. Scott No. 8a.

AN INTERESTING AND RARE CIRCULAR RATE USE ON A TREASURY DEPARTMENT SEMI-OFFICIAL COVER.

The "Paid 10" has no apparent meaning and may have been struck on top of a group of circulars.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, "T-E-N", large margins all around, manuscript cancel with matching "Pleasant Grove NC, May 20" postmark on charming adversity cover made from printed legal act, embellished with blue hearts front and back, addressed to Miss Eliza Long, Hillsboro, N.C.; some light toning and stain spots, a Very Fine and charming adversity use.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, "frame lines", four large margins including two full lines and 90% of left frameline, shows portion of adjacent stamp at right, colorless printing flaw in "S" of "Cents", tied by partial "Culpeper C.H., Va." cds on neat homemade envelope to Macon, Ga., Extremely Fine and choice; with 2009 C.S.A. certificate.

Lot 2451    

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, "frame lines", trace of frame at top and partial frame at left, pre-print paper crease, tied on cover by bold "JACKSON" Mississippi straightline and manuscript "June the 7" dating on brown homemade cover addressed to Mrs. W. J. Martin, South Carolina, Anderson District, Pendleton PO; bit of back flap missing, signed "Dietz" on flap, Very Fine.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED FRAMELINE USES WITH THE "JACKSON" STRAIGHTLINE.

Warren J. Martin enlisted on 1-15-62 and was mustered into "G" Company, SC 22nd Infantry, Evans' Brigade, French's Division, Depart of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida (later Army of Northern Virginia). Military records show him detailed as regimental teamster in Quartermaster Department. Wounded 31 July 1864. Captured at Five Forks 1 April 1865, on roll of prisoners at Point Lookout, Maryland, and released with oath of allegiance on June 29, 1865. Described as 5 ft. 7 in. tall, dark complexion, black hair, dark hazel eyes.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, strip of four, uncanceled and without postal markings, tied by period staining on gold and white leaf wallpaper cover addressed to Col. H. M. Favrot, Superintendent army records for Louisiana, Richmond, Va., endorsed "Care of Col. N. N. Galleher, Nachitoches", Fine, ex-Richey, Finney.

THE STRIP WAS UNDOUBTEDLY AFFIXED TO PAY THE TRANS-MISSISSIPPI RATE FROM LOUISIANA TO RICHMOND, BUT WAS MORE LIKELY CARRIED BY MILITARY COURIER.

Galleher was a staff officer and Assistant Adjutant General for the Military Department of Arkansas and West Louisiana. This cover is listed as WS-1 in the 1984 monograph by Richard Krieger on Trans-Mississippi Mails.

Capt. Henry M. Favrot, was born in West Baton Rouge parish in 1826 and died there in 1887. He served as a member of the Louisiana legislature in the 1850s and was opposed to secession. However, with the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Confederate Army and became captain of the "Delta Rifles," 4th Louisiana Infantry, and served throughout the entire war. Capt. Favrot participated in the Battle of Shiloh, was stricken with typhoid fever at Corinth and later returned to New Orleans. After his recovery he was sent to Northern Virginia with rank of colonel to gather all the records of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Lot 2454    

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing, huge margins except full at left, tied neat "Raleigh, N.C. Jun" double-circle datestamp on clean buff cover with multicolored "Our Flag, SC" patriotic sticker (CSA ST-1, cat $2,500) with "SC" standing for "Southern Congress", addressed to Dr. J. W. Hunter, Salem, N.C.; offered as is, Very Fine, ex-Judd, C. Hart; signed Kimbrough and Kaufmann on reverse.
Scott No. 12    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Dr. J. W. Hunter of Salem, North Carolina, was a dental surgeon. He was one of the organizers of the North Carolina Dental Society in Charlotte, NC, shortly after the war and was then Second Vice-President; he served as president in 1877, serving twice as president as well as treasurer for two years. He graduated from Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in 1856. He was for 30 years dentist to the Salem Female Academy. During the war, he was subjected to the requirements of the NC conscript laws and ordered into service. He claimed exemption on the grounds of practicing a medical specialty and the NC Supreme Court decided in his favor.
