Panama, Registry, 1916, 5c on 6c purple & black, in combination with Acknowledgment of Receipt, 1916, 2½c red orange (H23) on two covers; includes censor taped registered returned receipt corner card cover to Baltimore, Md., in combination with 1915, 2¢ carmine & black (206) all tied by purple "Bocas Del Toro, Set 6, 1918" cds and bar duplex, and on scarce 1922, 5c on 10c Registration entire to Kiel, Germany canceled by purple "Colon, Ago, 13, 1924" cds and bar duplex, Very Fine.

Peru, 1858, Coat of Arms, 1d deep blue, with four large margin and bold color, tied on 1858 folded letter from Lima to Genoa with Lima cancel; endorsed "Italia Stati Sardi" at lower left, backstamped with red boxed "Genoa Arrivo 22 Gen, 59" datestamp, a very unusual usage to Italy, Extremely Fine and choice.

Lot 1648    

Sweden, 1814, "Feather Letter", addressed to the Crown Sheriff, Mr Gädda in Kärra from "Strömstad on Sept 11, 1814 at 8 P.M.", Very Fine, scarce and with a lovely intact feather.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Sweden instituted feather mail almost two centuries ago, a special delivery system whereby a carrier made a special trip with a letter. The color and size of the feather indicated the speed, whether the carrier could stop for the night, or continue right through the night.
