Confederacy, 1861, 10¢ light blue. Large margins to just into frameline at top right, placed over U.S. 1857, 1¢ blue, type V on cover to Curdsville, Va., tied by bold "Richmond, Va., Oct 13, 1862" cds, docketing at top, Very Fine and choice, an unusual usage; with 1997 P.S.E. certificate.

Confederacy, 1861, 10¢ dark blue, Hoyer printing, malformed "T" of "TEN". Position 4, deep color, large margins except close at top right corner, tied by unusual grid on 1862 folded letter with matching "Greensborough, Ga., Mar 11" cds at left, addressed to Vice President Alexander Stephens in Richmond Va., letter with interesting content from N.G. Foster who argues for the withholding of cotton from the European market, fight for control of the Mississippi, Manassas, etc., Extremely Fine, a lovely example of the so called "Zen" Cents variety.

Confederacy, 1861, 10¢ dark blue, Hoyer printing. A gem single with enormous margins, tied by "Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 10, 1862" on cover to Yorktown, Va. with "T.R.R. Cobb's Ga. Legion" endorsement at lower left, Extremely Fine and choice, a gorgeous item, ex-Cole, Hill.

Lot 330    

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ light blue, De La Rue printing. Four ample to large margins, bottom stamp with light crease, tied by bold "Warrington, Fla./Oct. 17" townmark used as a military field cancel on cover to Selma, Alabama, Extremely Fine and choice, a very rare usage.
Scott No. 6    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

Warrington, Florida fell into Union hands on May 10, 1862, but the retreating Confederate forces managed to evacuate the contents of the post office including the town's circular datestamp. From that date until at least November 1862 the device was used as an army field cancellation, although surviving examples are quite rare.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing. Large margins and fresh rich color, tied by gorgeous strike of the Patterson, N.C. Paid 10 in Outlined "C" with Masonic Links, matching town postmark at lower left, an Extremely Fine gem, one of the most beautiful Fancy Cancellations used in the Confederacy, a stunning cover of the highest exhibition quality, ex-Haas, Dietz.
