Black French Consular octagonal "Cuba 17 Juil 72" cds on 1871 folded letter to London, numerous markings include black manuscript "2/" (double rate), black handstamped egg shaped "FR. F 20c" French accountancy upper middle, with a black manuscript "2/" due adjacent backstamped double line "* Ligne-B * Paq. Fr * 25 Juil 71" French packet cds & red British transit, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Probably carried per the French steamer "Washington", departing Vera Cruz (en route to Cuba as an intermediate stop), arriving St. Nazaire, France 10-Aug. Franking paid the correct 1 shilling per half ounce letter rate for up to an ounce per French Packet from St. Nazaire.

Folded letter with red "Altdorf, 16.Jan." origin date stamp, illustrated crown with curved "Registered", French entry cds, manuscript "franco and redommendirt prepant", manuscript "28/8" accountancy, with the "8" crossed through, double line "Paris 21 Janv 49" transit cds, and partial "Shipston on Stour Ja 24 1849" receiving cds on the reverse, Very Fine, a lovely cover.

Or U.S. 25 Notes Aug 17" depreciated currency cds, manuscript "6" crossed through with a "12" decimes substituted, square "FR 1F 73c" French accountancy handstamp, framed red "Retuned-For Postage" handstamp, Extremely Fine, although initially routed per the Cunard steamer of 1-Aug (China), this was returned for additional postage, and rerouted per the Inman Line steamer City of Washington, departing Liverpool 5-Aug, Queenstown 6-Aug, arriving New York 17-Aug.
