(Overland Pony Express) Wells Fargo & Co., 1861 $4 black, Pony Express Adhesive. Position 9, full margins all around, cancelled by blue San Francisco "Running Pony" oval datestamp, tiny negligible surface scrape at top right, Very Fine and choice, ex-Caspary; with 2005 P.F. certificate.

One of the few $4 Black Pony Stamps with the Running Pony handstamp. One of five recorded used examples of the $4.00 black Pony Express stamp.

(Overland Pony Express) Pony Express/The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company/St. Joseph, Mo (1861) green large oval in circle handstamp on 1860 3¢ red Star Die entire to Sutler William A. Carter at Fort Bridger, Utah Territory (now Wyoming), entire with "Pony Express, Collect 2" ($2 Pony Express fee) endorsement at top and pen strokes cancelling the indicia, entire professionally mended along top edge with manuscript "Pony Express" drawn in & indicia replaced, handsome Very Fine appearance.
Estimate    $5,000 - 7,500.

Cover illustrated in Frajola-Kramer-Walske's "The Pony Express: A Postal History" (page 140). A rare westbound pony cover that was carried over 1000 miles across the plains in as little as 108 hours and then delivered to a famous person at an historic location on the route.

Blue oval handstamp with matching Running Pony San Francisco/Jan. 2 oval handstamp on 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt to Maine, manuscript "½" at top indicating a half ounce or a $5 double rate, backstamped with green "Pony Express/The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company/Jan. 20/ St. Joseph, Mo." large oval within circle datestamp & on front nice strike of green "St. Joseph, Mo./Jan. 21" cds, the indicia & right side added, handsome Very Fine appearance, ex-Clifford.

(Overland Pony Express) Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Company/San Francisco, Cal. Red oval handstamp with matching Running Pony San Francisco oval handstamp on 1853-55 10¢ Nesbitt (rebacked front) with red Wells, Fargo & Co. company frank, addressed to Connecticut, nice strike of green "St. Joseph, Mo./Apr. 26" cds, the indicia & most of the printed frank have been replaced with portions of the markings expertly drawn in, Very Fine appearance, one of the few covers with the Pony markings in red, a gorgeous cover.

(Overland Pony Express) Pony Express/San Francisco Aug 21. Blue oval "Running Pony" handstamp on 1860 10¢ green Star Die entire with red Wells Fargo frank to New York City, entered the mails with "St. Joseph, Mo., Sep 2" cds, "1861" docket on the back, repaired at left with Wells Fargo 1861 $2 red (Scott 143L1 reprint) added with the pony handstamp painted in to replace Wells Fargo 1861 $1 red (Scott 143L3) that would have been affixed originally (fourth rate period July 1 to October 26, 1861), also a bit soiled, Fine appearance.

Blue double oval tying 1860 $1 red Pony adhesive on 1860-61 10¢ Star Die entire (four large margins, small tear) with red company frank to New York, postmarked at Pony Terminus by "St. Joseph, Mo./Sep. 17" cds, small sealed slit at center of "Stockton" marking & top left cover of entire professionally restored, which appears to go under adhesive, lovely Extremely Fine appearance; a stunning "Way" Cover.

Blue oval handstamp tying large margins 1862-64 10¢ brown on 1861 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, entire started in Aurora with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express/Aurora" handstamp, included is original enclosure datelined "Aurora, Sept. 24, '62", manuscript "Paid Pony" underneath Pony adhesive, expertly mended tear extending from flap through part of frank & indicia, otherwise fresh and Extremely Fine, a lovely cover from the Crittenden correspondence, ex-Kramer; with 1981 P.F. certificate.

Blue double circle handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-4) struck twice with one strike tying Wells Fargo 1862 10¢ brown (three clear to large margins, touched at left) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank and "California Hotel" printed corner card to Silver City, Nevada Territory, "1862" docket on the back, couple small edge tears at top & roughly opened at right, Fine eastbound use, an 1860's postal cover from Santa Clara to the same addressee at San Luis Ranch "Via Gilroy" accompanies.

Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 12-3 with "Cty") struck twice with one strike tying Wells Fargo 1862 10¢ brown (right margin single, large to irregular into design at bottom) on 1861 3¢ pink entire front only with black company frank, Sol. Wangenheim correspondence to San Francisco, 1862 use (first stamp period August 1862 to January 1863), repair above the stamp and closed tear at right, Very Fine appearance, An important and historic usage sent just 6 days after the advertised first trip of the Virginia Pony.
