San Francisco, Cal., Apr 22, 1861 (San Francisco), cds tying 1857, 3¢ dull red on cover with illustrated Franklin House corner card, to Forest Hill; cover a bit reduced at right, otherwise Very Fine; with 1987 B.P.A. certificate.

San Francisco, June 20, straightline postmark with magenta date and matching manuscript "40" cent rating on buff 1849 cover to Philadelphia Pa., couple trivial light stains, Very Fine.

A REMARKABLE COVER USED ON THE FIRST DAY OF USAGE OF THE FIRST SAN FRANCISCO HANDSTAMP.

The San Francisco straight line postmark was used only on mail dispatched on the third, fourth, and fifth contract sailings from San Francisco to Panama in 1849. It was used on some mail dispatched on the first departure of the S.S. "Panama" on June 20 (including this folded letter), all mail dispatched on the second departure of the S.S. "Oregon" on July 2, and some mail dispatched on the second departure of the S.S. "California" on August 1. The straight line postmark was preceded by manuscript postmarks and succeeded by cds postmarks.

San Francisco, July 2, bold strike of straightline postmark with magenta date and matching manuscript "40" cent rating on buff 1849 cover to Wethersfield, Conn.; small part of backflap missing, some edges restoration, Very Fine; with 1987 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

This was carried on the second of three sailings of this postmark on the S.S. "Oregon" that departed on July 2.

(San Francisco) 1906 Berlin To San Francisco Earthquake Postcard, said to be the earliest card with the notation " burned 101 JM" written in pencil below the address; it was posted in Berlin on April 20, 1906, just 2 days after the earthquake; sent to general delivery on May 26, before being "Advertised / June 2, 1906 / San Francisco, Cal., Due 1¢" faintly struck on card in magenta; and other markings "Zuruck" and non-reclame handstamp and received "USA/DEAD LETTER OFFICE June 2" triangle indicating impossible mail delivery following the earthquake; contents of message asking about well-being of addressee.

(San Francisco) 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Post Cards, interesting group of 26 vintage postcards with variety of views of the ruined city, most not often seen including "cooking in the streets", "smoking hulk of Palace Hotel"; "north on Kearny Street"; "General View of Ruined City from Refugee Camp"; and many more, all contemporary usage; condition better than the usual.
